The Short Story
For the last three years, St. Bonaventure had watched Siena pull out narrow victories in the annual Franciscan Cup game. Wednesday at the Reilly Center, Jaylen Adams and his teammates put a stop to that trend.
Adams scored 27 points, including 16 in the second half, to lead the Bonnies to an 81-74 win. Matt Mobley, Adams' backcourt partner, scored 20 points. Denzel Gregg finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds while David Andoh scored 13 points in 27 minutes off the bench.
The Bonnies led 39-34 at halftime and expanded the lead to as many as 10 points on two occasions in the second half. Siena rallied behind Brett Bisping, as his layup pulled the Saints to within 74-73 with 1:03 remaining. Bisping led Siena with 23 points.
Adams followed Bisping's shot with a drive for a score plus a foul, and his three-point play put St. Bonaventure up 77-73 with 41 seconds left. Mobley sealed the decision with two free throws.
St. Bonaventure improved to 4-2 with its third straight win. Siena fell to 2-5.
How It Happened:
- Denzel Gregg opened the game with an emphatic dunk 29 seconds into the game. The Saints would answer with back-to-back points from Ashante Shivers and Lavon Long. However, Josh Ayeni would sink a mid-range jumper and a couple of free-throws and Matt Mobley would drive to the basket for a lay-in to give the Bonnies an 8-4 lead heading into the first media timeout.
- The Bonnies led 13-12 heading into the second media timeout.
- The score stayed close for the duration of the half. Andoh would make some noise during the first half, scoring five straight points to make it a 29-24 Bona lead.
- The Bonnies headed into the locker room leading 39-34.
- Coming out of the half, neither team would establish momentum as fouls were called early and often.
- It was a two-point St. Bonaventure lead when the Bonnies went on a 7-0 run to go ahead 52-43 at the 14:11 mark.
- Two Adams free throws with 8:50 left gave St. Bonaventure its largest lead of the night at 63-52.
- The Saints would not go away and used a 7-2 surge to cut their deficit to 70-66 with 5:06 left.
- The Bonnies led 74-69 but Bisping converted back-to-back layups that pulled Siena within 74-73 with 1:03 left.
- Jaylen Adams would answer the call with 41 seconds left in the game, when he drove, scored and was fouled. His three-point play gave the Bonnies a 77-73 lead.
- Marquis Wright, who finished with 18 points for Siena, lost the ball on a drive on Siena's ensuing possession. Wright fouled Mobley, who made two free throws to essentially seal the game.
Quotes From Coach Mark Schmidt
"In this game, we found a way. It wasn't always pretty. We didn't play our best, but we did shoot the ball well from the foul line. We made the plays when we needed to make the plays. I thought [Adams] played extremely well, especially in the second half. I thought [Andoh] was a big key coming in and getting 13 points for us.
"We defended decently. We battled on the backboard even though we lost it. We're still a work in progress, but I think we made another step in the right direction and we found a way to win against a really good team."
[On Siena] "It's always a good game when we play Siena … they're a veteran team. They have strong guys inside and we knew coming into the game that we were going to have our hands full inside, but we found a way … thank goodness Siena didn't shoot the ball well from the foul line."
"In order to have a good year, you have to win your home games and this was a home game against a really good team. We knew going in that not one of our guys in our locker room had beaten Siena, so that was a motivating factor for them. But, any chance you've got a shot to win against a good team, it gives you confidence. We're glad to have the Cup, but I'm glad we're continuing to improve."
[On Adams' game-clinching play] "He has good body control. He's strong. You need your better players to make plays in those situations. That's why they're called your "better players." They need to make those plays and with [Mobley] and [Adams] with the ball a lot, we have confidence in them to make plays and they'll continue to make plays, I think for us."
Beyond The Boxscore:
- The win was coach Mark Schmidt's 150th at St. Bonaventure. In his 10th season, his record is 150-134.
- The Bonnies hit the 80-point mark for the fourth time in their six games.
- St. Bonaventure made just four three-pointers but compensated by going 23-27 at the free throw line.
- Matt Mobley's 20 points were his fifth game this year of 20 points or more.
- Denzel Gregg has three consecutive double-doubles. He had one in his career before this season. Gregg also blocked four shots.
- David Andoh's 13 points were a season high for the senior, who sat out last season as a transfer. He had scored just seven points in the Bonnies' first three games but has 29 over the past three. Andoh's six rebounds against the Saints were also his season best.
- With Chinonso Obokoh sidelined with a knee injury and Josh Ayeni saddled with foul trouble much of the night, freshman Amadi Ikpeze played 10 minutes and grabbed three rebounds.
