The Short Story
Matt Mobley scored 22 points and Jaylen Adams and Idris Taqqee each added 16 to lead St. Bonaventure to a 99-72 win over Alfred (N.Y.) University in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon in the Reilly Center.

The Bonnies shot 57 percent from the field and outrebounded the Saxons 46-26. St. Bonaventure led 51-27 at halftime and while Alfred closed the gap in the second half, the outcome was never in doubt.

Freshman forward Josh Ayeni was impressive with 12 points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.

How It Happened

  • Jaylen Adams opened the scoring with a three-pointer 30 seconds into the game. Idris Taqqee completed the three-point play to put St. Bonaventure up 6-0 in the first 90 seconds of the game.
  • The Bonnies, thanks in part to five points from Adams and four points from Matt Mobley, dominated the first 5:00 minutes of play, leading 19-2 at the first media timeout.
  • Alfred matched the Bonnies' next 14 points to bring the Saxons to within 11 with 7:34 left to play in the first half.
  • David Andoh would come through with an emphatic block of Tristan Hook with 6:33 left in the first half, helping to spur a 19-3 run that would take the Bonnies to halftime leading 51-27.
  • During that stretch, Mobley contributed seven of his 22 total points, capped by a dunk with 3:57 left in the half.
  • Taqqee would open up the second half with a layup as part of his 16 points effort, followed 40 seconds later by three Adams free throw shots after a foul from beyond the three-point line, to contribute to his 16 points.
  • Soon after a Josh Ayeni dunk at a the 10:19 mark, Alfred's Nick Schmidt, one Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt's two sons on the Saxon team, would contribute a three-pointer with 10:03 left in the game.
  • Walk-on freshman Jack Galatio got to the free throw line with 2:05 left in the game, making both of his shots in his first appearance for the Bonnies.

Quotes From Coach Mark Schmidt
- "We're a work in progress. I thought from an offensive standpoint, we played well. It's not just an offensive game ... we didn't do a good job of defending. We weren't disciplined enough and from a defensive standpoint, we need to shore things up."

- On Matt Mobley: "Matt did a good job of scoring. Now it's both ends. You want to be a complete player. We know he can score. We know he can defend. He needs to continue to do that. But, this was really the first time he had a uniform on in over a year and a half, so it's good for him. I thought from an offensive standpoint he was fine, but he just has to shore some things up, just like a lot of our guys."

- On Josh Ayeni: "He's aggressive, sometimes too aggressive. He's gotta slow down a little bit, but just like all the freshmen, you're trying to learn. It's the first time he's had a uniform on, he's nervous, he moved a little bit too fast, but he's a physical player and just has to tone that down a little bit. This was a good first step for him, playing in front of a crowd."

- On opposing his sons Nick and Derek: "It was special. We talked about it last spring, if they were interested in doing it. You don't have too many opportunities to have your sons play on the same court you're coaching, so it's something we'll be able to talk about for the rest of our lives. It's really special."
