The Short Story
Jaylen Adams continues to dazzle. Controlling the game for almost 40 minutes, Adams led St. Bonaventure to a 90-84 win over Buffalo. Adams scored 28 points and added eight assists, four rebounds and four steals as the Bonnies (5-2) won their fourth in a row.

St. Bonaventure had to sweat out this win, however. The Bonnies led 48-35 at halftime and were up 83-72 with 2:16 left before Buffalo began to rally. With a flurry of three-point shots, the Bulls closed to within 86-84 on a Blake Hamilton long range jumper with 25 seconds left. Idris Taqqee made two free throws with 22 seconds remaining to give the Bonnies breathing room, and the Bulls then turned the ball over on their final possession.

Adams had plenty of help in this one as four of his teammates scored in double figures. Idris Taqqee scored 16 points, Denzel Gregg finished with 14, David Andoh 12 and Josh Ayeni 10. Matt Mobley finished with nine points and six assists.

How It Happened:

  • The Bonnies began the game on an 11-4 run over the first 5:25. The opening run started with a Jaylen Adams lay-in off a steal.
  • After falling behind 17-16, the Bonnies would then respond, outscoring the Bulls 20-6 over the next 5:44 to go ahead 36-23. The Bonnies would never trail again in the game.
  • Adams would continue his hot play, making back-to-back threes as part of his 29 points on the day, helping the Bonnies head into the locker room with a 48-35 lead.
  • Back-to-back lob passes from Adams to Gregg put the Bonnies up by 11 at 78-67 with 3:39 left.
  • The Bulls would respond by outscoring the Bonnies 17-9 over the next 3:14 to pull within 86-84.
  • Idris Taqee would seal the deal, however, finishing off Buffalo with four straight free throws after two separate trips to the foul line.

Quotes From Coach Mark Schmidt
"I thought it was a great college game. It was a great environment. The '77 team coming back brought a lot of attention and a lot of excitement. This place has great tradition… his shows how important Bonaventure basketball is. Our job was to go out there and give them a good show and make them proud. I thought we did that. We didn't play a perfect game, but we found a way to win."

On players other than Adams and Mobley scoring: "It's going to be important as we go forward. They're gonna look at our team and try to take away our guards (Mobley and Adams) and our role players have to step up and we certainly have a lot of confidence they can. I thought [Idris Taqee] played terrific. Denzel has been doing this all year. Josh hit those elbow jump shops. When they try to take something away, we have those other guys we can go to and when they have the success they had today it gives them confidence. This game can only help us as we go forward."

Beyond The Boxscore:

  • The Bonnies hit the 90-point mark for the third time this season.
  • A day after the 50-year anniversary of the first game ever played in the famed arena, St. Bonaventure moved to 3-0 at the Reilly Center this season.
  • St. Bonaventure has now won three straight over Buffalo and six of the past seven. The Bulls, who went to the past two NCAA Tournaments, have never won at Reilly Center (0-6).
