The Starting Five Notes
1. St. Bonaventure will host George Washington in front of a sold-out Homecoming Weekend crowd. The Bonnies have won four straight games and are in fourth place in the Atlantic 10, one game ahead of GW. This will be the first sellout at the RC since 2012.
2. The "big three" of senior forward Dion Wright, senior guard Marcus Posley and sophomore guard Jaylen Adams is the second-highest scoring trio in the A-10 (Davidson is first, and Richmond is third). The three combine to average 53.4 points per game. They all rank in the top 16 scorers in the Atlantic 10 with Posley (19.1) third, Adams (18.1) eighth and Wright (16.3) 16th.
3. While he was very good as a freshman, Adams has made a significant improvement this season. His three-point shooting percentage has improved from .324 to .448, contributing to his 8.1 points-per game jump in scoring. Monday, Adams was named the A-10 Player of the Week after he averaged 25 points per game over two wins last week. He scored a career high 31 points to lead the Bonnies to an 83-73 win at Saint Joseph's Feb. 3, then his 19 points against Saint Louis Feb. 7 included the game-winning three-pointer that landed on ESPN's Top 10 Plays.
4. With little fanfare, Dion Wright continues to be one of the most effective and productive players in the A-10. He leads all A-10 players with 11 double-doubles and is the second-leading rebounder (9.3) and 16th-leading scorer (16.3) in the conference. His 12th double-double will be the most of any player during Mark Schmidt's nine seasons as coach.
5. The Bonnies' win at Fordham Feb. 10 was the 140th for Mark Schmidt as St. Bonaventure coach. He now stands third on the program's coaching wins list, one ahead of Eddie Donovan.
Series History
This will be the 59th meeting in a series that George Washington leads 34-24. The Colonials won the past three meetings with the last Bonnies win coming on Jan. 4, 2012 at the Reilly Center.
GW Quick Notes
• GW had won three straight games, including at VCU, prior to an 84-66 home loss to Saint Joseph's on Wednesday.
• The Colonials are a game behind the Bonnies in the A-10 standings in fifth place as teams continue to jockey for a top-four spot and the double-bye in the A-10 Tournament that goes with that.
• One of the tallest teams in the A-10, GW is also one of the most veteran with three seniors, a junior and a sophomore in the starting lineup. Forward Tyler Cavanaugh, a transfer from Wake Forest and a Syracuse native, leads GW in scoring a 16.6 points per game. Senior Patricio Garino, a 6-6 swingman, averages 13.6 points per game and leads the A-10 in three-point field goal shooting (.458). Senior center Kevin Larsen averages 11.7 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds. Senior point guard Joe McDonald anchors the backcourt.
Great Start to A-10
At 8-3, St. Bonaventure is off to its best start to Atlantic 10 play since the 1982-83 team opened with 10 wins in its first 13 conference games. The program record for A-10 wins in a season is 11 in 1999-00.
Adams Now 2x A-10 Player of Week
Last season, a broken finger ended point guard Jaylen Adams' superb freshman season prematurely. Last winter, his injury likely kept the A-10's coaches from putting Adams on the All-Rookie team – a spot that seemed a sure thing considering he was averaging 10 points and 4.5 assists per game and led all A-10 players in assist-to-turnover ratio at the time. Midway through the A-10 season, he has played at an All-Conference level.
• Adams has now been named the A-10 Player of the Week twice this season, most recently for the week ending Feb. 7. That week, the Baltimore, Md., native averaged 25 points per game to lead the Bonnies to wins at Saint Joseph's and over Saint Louis. Adams scored a career high 31 points with seven assists at Saint Joseph's, then followed that with 19 points and four assists against the Billikens. He made the game-winning three-pointer as time expired in the 65-62 decision over Saint Louis.
• For the season, Adams is second in the A-10 in three-point percentage (.448) and ranks eighth in scoring (18.1), second in assists (5.2 per game), sixth in three-pointers per game (2.9) and second in free throw percentage (.881).
Wright Piles Up Double-Doubles
Dion Wright now has 11 double-doubles this season, the most by an Atlantic 10 player this season and tied for the most by any player during Mark Schmidt's nine seasons as Bonnies coach with Andrew Nicholson (2011) and Youssou Ndoye (2015). Seven of Wright's double-doubles have been against A-10 teams.
