The Short Story
Making every play when it is needed the most has become a theme of this season for St. Bonaventure. Wednesday night at the Reilly Center, the Bonnies did it again and got an 80-76 win over Duquesne.
St. Bonaventure now is 11-4 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, tying the program record for A-10 wins set in 1999-00. The win also kept the Bonnies in fourth place in the Atlantic 10, one game ahead of George Washington.
The game tied at 72-72 with 3:17 left after a Duquesne three-pointer. The Bonnies came up with two defensive stands, then Jaylen Adams gave the Bonnies a four-point edge at the free throw line, first with a pair at the 1:53 mark and then with 1:12 remaining. It was a 77-74 game when Dion Wright corralled an offensive rebound and was fouled with 19 seconds left. He made one of two free throws to make it a 78-74 lead.
The Dukes' Tysean Powell answered with a layup that brought the visitors within two at 78-76 with 11 ticks left. Wright then was fouled again and sealed the win with two more free throws.
As has become his habit, Adams starred when his team needed him to, scoring 18 of his 24 points in the second half. Wright added 15 and Posley scored 11. Freshman center Jordan Tyson had eight points and seven rebounds.
In the second half, the Bonnies never led until the 3:29 mark. St. Bonaventure is now 6-1 this season in games decided by five points or less.
In gaining a split of the season series, the Bonnies held Duquesne to 38 percent shooting overall. They also limited Dukes leading scorers Micah Mason (16 points) and Derrick Colter (13) to a combined 29 points; those two totaled 50 points in the Dukes' win over the Bonnies last month.
How It Happened:

- The Dukes surged back, taking a 20-16 lead midway through the first half after a 13-4 run.
- St. Bonaventure went ahead 29-26 after two Jaylen Adams free throws with 4:06 to play in the first, but again Duquesne came back, this time with a 10-2 run to take a 36-31 lead.
- Marcus Posley drove and scored and then drained a three-pointer with 31 seconds left in the half, and the teams went into halftime tied at 36.
- The Dukes outrebounded the Bonnies 28-16 in the first half but were only able to score eight second-chance points. Duquesne also committed 10 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
- Duquesne started the second half hot, opening a 45-37 lead less than four minutes into the half.
- St. Bonaventure missed its first six shots in the half before Derrick Woods made a jump hook at the 15:48 mark.
- The Dukes made six of their first eight three-point shots in the second half. Derrick Colter's three-pointer at the 12:40 mark put the Dukes ahead 52-46

- It was a 65-59 Dukes lead when Adams, who entered the game second in the A-10 in three-point percentage, made back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game at 65 with 7:21 to play.
- The Bonnies were finally able to grab the lead for the first time in the half with Posley made a three-pointer that made it 72-69 with 3:29 remaining.
- Eric James wasted little time, answering Posley with his own three-pointer to tie the game with 3:17 left.
- The teams traded missed shots and then Jaylen Adams stripped Dukes center Darius Lewis and he was fouled. Adams made two free throws to give the Bonnies a 74-72 lead with 1:53 to go.
- Denzel Gregg blocked Micah Mason's drive and Adams was fouled; he made two more free throws at the 1:12 mark to extend the lead to 76-72.
- Mason missed a three-pointer and Jordan Tyson grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He made one of two at the line to make it a 77-72 game.

Quotes From Coach Mark Schmidt
"We didn't play great offensively, but I thought we played very hard and I thought we showed some great character. When we were down by nine, our guys didn't panic. Even though we missed a ton of shots, our defense kept us in it. We got annihilated on the backboard in the first half but we won the second half and our guys showed some toughness."
"We have good players who are mentally tough as well as guys that have been there before. Once you've been there before and have had success it's easier. Our guys really found a way. Jay, Dion and Marcus are our veteran guys that have been in this situation before and they came through."
"There was never a comfortable moment in the game today. When we hit the shot to tie the game I felt better that we had some momentum, but I never felt settled in at any point in the game. We've had success at the end of games and we've made plays at the end of games. The more you're in a situation and have success in that situation, the more comfortable you're going to be when it comes up again."
"I thought Jordan Tyson was a huge key in the victory. Eight points, seven rebounds … He had more rebounds where he kept them alive and I thought he was terrific."
