MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The St. Bonaventure University golf team stands in 13th place out of 19 teams following day one of the Bash at the Beach held at the Surf Golf and Beach Club on Monday.
The Bonnies shot a strong 290 in the first round, but posted a 300 team score in the second round for a total of 590. James Madison paces the field at 563 ahead of Arkansas State (566), Western Kentucky (575), Gardner-Webb (575) and Appalachian State (575).
Senior Josh Stauffer carded one of the best rounds of the day in the early round, firing a three-under 68 on the par 71 6,741-yard course. Stauffer birded two of his first three holes and finished the front nine in -4. The second round did not treat him as well as he closed the day with a second round 78 for a total of 146. (+4).
Fellow senior Patrick Milkovich shot 77 in the first round, but finished with a strong even-par 71 for a 148 total (+6). The rest of the Bonnies lineup remained bunched together – Darren Simons shot 73 in the morning round followed by a 77 for a 150 total (+8) with Corey Long (77-74/151) and Brent Morgan (72-80/152) rounding out the scoring for the Bonnies. Playing as an individual, Patrick Sheerer shot 77-76/153.
The Bonnies are in position to be able to make a big jump on day two, standing just three shots out of ninth.
The second and final day of the tournament begins with a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday.
