BALTIC, Conn. – Darren Simons and Pat Milkovich each shot 72 in the afternoon round and Josh Stauffer made a bit of St. Bonaventure golf history as the Bonnies moved into eighth place following the first two rounds of the 'Til Duty is Done Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.
St. Bonaventure shot 310 in the morning round, but bounced back with a team score of 298 during the second round for a 608 tournament total. Host UConn leads the way at 564 while Rhode Island (575), Army (578), Bryant (580) and Hartford (589) round out the top five. The field includes 13 teams.
Simons placed in a tie for 18th on the individual leaderboard after shooting even-par on the 6,790-yard Moeghan Sun Golf Club during his afternoon round. That followed his morning 76 for a 148 total on the day (+4). Included in Simons' day was an eagle three on the par-five 13th hole during the second round – the only eagle of the day by any of the field's 76 players. Simons came home with a three-under 33 on the back nine to finish the afternoon.
Josh Stauffer carded a 75 during the morning round and finished with a 76 for a 151 total (+7). With his birdie on the sixth hole of his morning round, Stauffer broke a tie with Nathan Peck (2007-10) for the most career birdies by any Bonnies player since records were kept beginning with the 1993-94 season. Following Saturday's competition, Stauffer now has 254 career birdies including seven on Saturday. Stauffer was one-over par for the tournament following the first 34 holes, including a three-under 33 on the opening nine of the second round, but found trouble on both 17 and 18 to finish the day.
Milkovich struggled in the morning, shooting 80, but rebounded with a standout second round to total 152 (+8) for the tournament, capping the day with a birdie on the par-five 18th.
Matt Abendroth shot 79-78/157 (+13) and Corey Long finished 80-81/161 (+17) to round out the Bonnies team scoring.
Competition wraps up with the final round on Sunday.
