The Starting Five Notes
1. Wednesday night, St. Bonaventure visits Richmond for the only meeting this season between the teams. A combined 5-1 in the Atlantic 10, both teams come off wins last weekend.
2. The backcourt of Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley is the fourth highest scoring teammate tandem in the country, averaging 41.9 points per game. One of the top 50 candidates for the John Wooden Award, Adams leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks ninth nationally in scoring (22.3). He also leads the Atlantic 10 in assists and is second in three-point field goals. Mobley ranks fifth in the A-10 at 19.6 points per game and is the Bonnies' second-leading rebounder. Together, they fuel the A-10's top scoring offense (84.2 points per game).
3. Senior Denzel Gregg has joined Adams and Mobley to form a superb "Big 3". In his first year as a starter, Gregg is averaging 13.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game with five double-doubles, most recently a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds in last Saturday's win over George Mason. He is second in the A-10 in blocks and leads the A-10 in offensive rebounds.
4. Coach Mark Schmidt needs one win to take sole possession of second place on the program's coaching wins list. Schmidt, the 2016 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, has 156 career wins and is tied with Jim Satalin.
5. Sophomore point guard Nelson Kaputo scored a season-high 13 points in the win over George Mason, showing that he is starting to return to the form he showed last year. Kaputo sat out the first nine games this season to concentrate on academics.
Series Notes:
This will be the 23rd meeting in a series that Richmond leads 16-6. Last year, the Bonnies' win at the Reilly Center snapped a three-game win streak by Richmond in the series. St. Bonaventure's last win at the Robins Center came in 2009.
Spider Notes:
• Seniors T.J. Cline and ShawnDre' Jones lead the Spiders, who are off to a 3-0 start the the A-10 season with wins over Davidson, Fordham and GW. An all-conference pick last year, Cline leads Richmond at 18 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. The 6-9 forward is third in the A-10 in rebounding. Cline also tops the Spiders in assists (76). Jones averages 16.7 points per game and has made a team-high 31 three-pointers (43 percent shooting).
• Sophomore guard Khwan Fore and freshman guard DeMonte Buckingham average 11 and 9.0 points per game, respectively.
St. Bonaventure vs. Richmond: The Last Meeting: Jan. 31, 2016 at the Reilly Center.: Bonnies 84, Richmond 68
St. Bonaventure faced a six-point halftime deficit but the Bonnies limited Richmond to 27 percent shooting (9-33) in the second half, including 4-16 from three-point range, while making 15 of their 24 shots (62.5 percent). St. Bonaventure scored the first 11 points after halftime, taking what had been a 39-33 Richmond lead to a 44-35 advantage. Marcus Posley led all scorers with 26 points, and he also added six assists. Dion Wright scored 19 points and grabbed a career high 14 rebounds. Jaylen Adams scored 18 points with six assists and Denzel Gregg chipped in 10 points.
Adams Gets Better and Better
Jaylen Adams earned plenty of preseason accolades and he's lived up to the hype. Adams is ninth in the nation in scoring (22.3 ppg), leads the Atlantic 10 in assists (6.2 apg) and is second in three-pointers (3.1/game) and sixth in steals (1.9). Adams has 10 games of 20 points or more on the year including a pair of 31-point performances. After a slow start shooting, he went 37-82 (.451) from three-point range over the past 10 games.
Gregg Provides Senior Leadership
Like many St. Bonaventure players before, Denzel Gregg's career has been marked by improvement, a testament to the program's player development. A fan favorite for his highlight-reel dunks and blocks, the A-10's coaches named him the co-Sixth Man of the Year in 2015-16. The team's only four-year senior, the 6-7 forward is off to a strong start to his final year. He has scored in double figures 11 of the past 12 games. His 13.3 average for the year is more than three points a game better than last year. At the same time, Gregg continues to be a factor on both ends of the floor. He is fourth in the A-10 in rebounding (7.8) and tied for the A-10 lead in blocked shots (2.2/game). Five of his six career double-doubles have been this season. Gregg stands fifth all-time at Bona's in that category with 115.
Three-Point Production
With two high-scoring guards leading the way, it is not surprising that St. Bonaventure is a strong three-point shooting team. Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley are in the top five in the Atlantic 10 in three-pointers per game (3.2 and 2.9 respectively) and as a team, the Bonnies are second in the A-10 with a .376 three-point field goal percentage.
Adams, Mobley Reach 1,000 Points
In the Dec. 19 win over Army, Jaylen Adams became the 43rd player in St. Bonaventure men's basketball history to reach 1,000 career points. Adams now has 1,093 points in 67 games. Matt Mobley also has topped the 1,000 point mark for his college career. He has 1,031 points between Central Connecticut State (737) and St. Bonaventure (294).
Offense Stays Hot, Leads A-10
The Bonnies averaged 77.9 points per game last season, the best average during coach Mark Schmidt's tenure and the third-highest scoring average in the A-10. Before that, Schmidt's highest-scoring team was in 2013-14 (73.4). This season, the Bonnies have clicked on offense despite having so many new players. Led by guards Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley, St. Bonaventure leads the A-10 and ranks 19th nationally in scoring at 84.2 points per game. The Bonnies have reached the 90-point mark five times including two 100-point games. Only twice have they not reached 70 points.
