The Starting Five Notes

1.  St. Bonaventure heads west for the first game of this season's home-and-away series with Saint Louis.  The Bonnies come off a 20-point win over Fordham last Saturday in Rochester, while the Billikens earned their first A-10 win of the season last Saturday at George Mason. St. Bonaventure has had recent success against Saint Louis, winning the last four meetings.

2.  In his first year as a starter, senior Denzel Gregg is playing better than any point in his career, including last season when he was co-Sixth Man of the Year in the Atlantic 10. He is among the A-10 leaders in rebounding, blocks and field goal percentage and has become a reliable scorer with 14 games in double figures.

3.  The win over Fordham gave Coach Mark Schmidt sole possession of second place on the program's coaching wins list. Schmidt, the 2016 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, now has 157 career wins, one ahead of Jim Satalin and trailing only Larry Weise (202).

4.  The backcourt of Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley is the fourth highest scoring teammate tandem in the country, averaging 42.1 points per game. Adams leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 10th nationally in scoring (22.3). He also leads the Atlantic 10 in assists and is second in three-point field goals. Mobley ranks fifth in the A-10 at 19.4 points per game and is the Bonnies' second-leading rebounder. Together, they fuel the A-10's top scoring offense (82.8 points/game).

5.  Freshman forward Josh Ayeni set season highs with 16 points and seven rebounds in the win over Fordham. He was 12-13 at the free throw line. Ayeni had been a starter in the 14 games prior to then, but came off the bench against the Rams.

St. Bonaventure vs. Saint Louis: The Last Meeting: March 5, 2016 at Chaifetz Arena: Bonnies 76, SLU 67
St. Bonaventure capped its best Atlantic 10 Conference season ever with a 76-67 win. The Bonnies finished 14-4 in the A-10, a school record for conference wins, and 22-7 overall.  The Bonnies led for all but 53 seconds of the game but the outcome was in doubt until late. It was a 67-61 lead with 3:42 left, but Marcus Posley made a three-pointer from the wing at the 2:34 mark to give the Bonnies some breathing room. Posley added a layup at the 1:48 mark to put St. Bonaventure in control at 72-61. Led by Jaylen Adams, the Bonnies went 9-18 from three-point range. Adams was 4-8 and led all scorers with 23 points. Posley added 18 and Dion Wright had 16 points and eight rebounds.

Series Notes:
This will be the 19th meeting in a series that Saint Louis leads 10-8. The Bonnies, however, have won the last four meetings including two straight in St. Louis.

Saint Louis Notes:
•The Billikens picked up their first A-10 win of the year last Saturday, a 63-56 decision at George Mason. Prior to that, Saint Louis had lost conference games to Rhode Island, La Salle, Davidson and Duquesne.
• Saint Louis is in its first year under new coach Travis Ford, who was at Oklahoma State until last year. Ford has plenty of experience in the A-10, however, as he was head coach at UMass for four seasons (2004-08).
• Saint Louis is last in the A-10 in scoring and 61 points per game. Guard Jermaine Bishop leads the Billikens at 11.6 points per game followed by Davell Roby (10.2) and Reggie Agbeko (10.1). Agbeko, a Buffalo, N.Y., native, is the team's top rebounder at 8.2 per game.

Gregg Provides Senior Leadership
Like many St. Bonaventure players before, Denzel Gregg's career has been marked by improvement, a testament to the program's player development. A fan favorite for his highlight-reel dunks and blocks, the A-10's coaches named him the co-Sixth Man of the Year in 2015-16. The team's only four-year senior, the 6-7 forward has scored in double figures 14 out of 17 games. His 13.6 average for the year is more almost four points a game better than last year. At the same time, Gregg continues to be a factor on both ends of the floor. He is third in the A-10 in rebounding (7.9) and second in the A-10 in blocked shots (2.0/game). Five of his six career double-doubles have been this season. Gregg stands fifth all-time at Bona's in blocked shots with 116.

Mobley Instant Offense
By any measure, Matt Mobley has provided instant offense in his debut season at St. Bonaventure. The 6-3 junior guard is fifth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 19.8 points per game. He is also third in the A-10 in three-point field goals (2.8 per game) and eighth in both three-point percentage (.400) and free throw percentage (.840). Mobley is doing much more than just scoring -- he is also averaging 5.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. He is 13th in the A-10 in rebounding, and the second-leading rebounder among A-10 guards. Mobley's production is not a surprise. He practiced with the Bonnies last season after transferring from Central Connecticut, where he averaged 17 points per game as a sophomore and was named the Northeast Conference's most improved player. Mobley had four games of 30-plus points that season.

Kaputo Earns First Starts
In place of Jaylen Adams, sophomore Nelson Kaputo started the last two games and acquitted himself very well. At Richmond, Kaputo scored 12 points with two assists in just his second career start. Jan. 14 against Fordham, he scored three points and handed out six assists, one short of his career high. The past three games have been Kaputo's most significant playing time this year. He returned to the active roster for the Niagara game after he did not compete in the first nine games of the season in order to concentrate on his academic responsibilities. Kaputo helped key the Jan. 7 win over George Mason by scoring a season-best 13 points in 20 minutes of action. Last season, Kaputo played in 30 games, coming off the bench in all but one of those games. He averaged 4.4 points and 1.8 assists.

Offense Stays Hot, Leads A-10
The Bonnies averaged 77.9 points per game last season, the best average during coach Mark Schmidt's tenure and the third-highest scoring average in the A-10. Before that, Schmidt's highest-scoring team was in 2013-14 (73.4). This season, the Bonnies have clicked on offense despite having so many new players. Led by guards Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley, St. Bonaventure leads the A-10 and ranks 29th nationally in scoring at 82.2 points per game. The Bonnies have reached the 90-point mark five times including two 100-point games. Only three times have they not reached 70 points.

Ayeni Shows Promise
Freshman forward Josh Ayeni earned a starting spot in 14 games -- rare for a first-year player in most programs but perhaps even more so at St. Bonaventure. While he has battled foul troubles throughout the year, Ayeni has shown the ability to stretch the floor with his shooting touch. In the Jan. 14 win over Fordham, he set season highs of 16 points, seven rebounds and 12 free throws. His previous season high was 12 points against Dayton Jan. 3. A late signee for the Bonnies this past summer, Ayeni is a native of Nigeria who played high school basketball at St. Frances (Md.), a team in the same league as Jaylen Adams' Mount St. Joseph.

Free Throws Continue To Be A Plus
Last season, St. Bonaventure set a school record with a .773 free throw percentage. That good shooting at the line has carried over into this season. The Bonnies are at .770 at the charity stripe, which is 13th best in the country and ranks second in the Atlantic 10 (only to Davidson's .771). Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley both rank in the top 10 in the conference in free throw percentage. The Bonnies have made 28 more free throws than their opponents.
