The Starting Five Notes

1.  Tuesday night, St. Bonaventure hosts Dayton in a matchup of two teams picked in the top five of the Atlantic 10's preseason poll. The Flyers were the preseason favorite to win the A-10 while the Bonnies were picked to finish fifth.  Both teams opened the A-10 schedule with wins last Friday. Last season, these teams played two memorable games, each winning on the other's home court.

2.  The backcourt of Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley is the third highest scoring teammate tandem in the country, averaging 44 points per game. One of the top 50 candidates for the Wooden Award, Adams leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks third nationally in scoring (23.5). He also leads the Atlantic 10 in assists and is second in three-point field goals. Mobley ranks fourth in the A-10 at 20.5 points per game and is the Bonnies' second-leading rebounder. Together, they fuel the A-10's top scoring offense (85.2 ppg).

3.  Senior Denzel Gregg has been the leader most people assumed he would be as a senior. Gregg is averaging 12.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and two blocks per game with four double-doubles. He is second in the A-10 in blocks and leads the A-10 in offensive rebounds.

4.  After a relatively quiet start, senior forward David Andoh came on strong in December. He scored in double figures six of the past eight games, averaging 13.0 points per game over that stretch.

5.  Coach Mark Schmidt is within two wins of passing Jim Satalin for second place on the program's coaching wins list. Schmidt, the 2016 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, has 155 career wins including two 20-win seasons in the last five years.

Series Notes:
• This will be the 32nd meeting between the teams; Dayton leads the series 21-10.
• The Bonnies' win at UD last February snapped UD's six-game win streak in the series.
• The first-ever meeting between the schools was in 1949.

Dayton Notes:
• Dayton knocked off La Salle, 66-55, last Friday at UD Arena. The Flyers held the Explorers almost 20 points below their season average.
• After a 2-2 start, Dayton has won eight of its last nine games, the only loss coming to Northwestern in Chicago.
• Dayton is led by a four-man senior class of Charles Cooke, Scoochie Smith, Kendall Pollard and Kyle Davis. Cooke, a 6-6 forward, was a first team All-Conference selection last year. He leads the Flyers in both scoring (18.7 ppg) and rebounding (5.7). Smith leads the team in assists with 50 from his point guard spot  and also is at 13.2 points per game. Pollard, who recently returned from an injury, averages 12.3 points per game. Cooke injured his back in the La Salle game and his status for Tuesday is uncertain.

Adams Gets Better and Better
Jaylen Adams earned plenty of preseason accolades and he's lived up to the hype. Adams is third in the nation in scoring (23.0 ppg) and leads the Atlantic 10 in assists (6.0 apg) and is second in three-pointers (3.2/game). Adams has nine games of 20 points or more on the year including a pair of 31-point performances. After a slow start shooting, he went 33-69 (.478) from three-point range over the past nine games. He has been named the Player of the Week in the Atlantic 10 Conference once, the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4.

Gregg Provides Senior Leadership - And Production
Like many St. Bonaventure players before, Denzel Gregg's career has been marked by improvement, a testament to the program's player development. A fan favorite for his highlight-reel dunks and blocks, the A-10's coaches namd him the co-Sixth Man of the Year in 2015-16. The team's only four-year senior, the 6-7 forward is off to a strong start to his final year. He has scored in double figures nine of the past 10 games. His 12.8 average for the year is more than three points a game better than last year. At the same time, Gregg continues to be a factor on both ends of the floor. He is fourth in the A-10 in rebounding (7.4) and second in blocked shots (2.0/game). Dec. 17 in the win over Niagara, Gregg became just the fifth player in program history to reach 100 career blocked shots. He stands fifth all-time at Bona's in that category with 108.

Offense Stays Hot, Leads A-10
The Bonnies averaged 77.9 points per game last season, the best average during coach Mark Schmidt's tenure and the third-highest scoring average in the A-10. Before that, Schmidt's highest-scoring team was in 2013-14 when the Bonnies averaged 73.4 points per game. This season, the Bonnies have clicked on offense despite having so many new players. Led by guards Jay Adams and Matt Mobley, St. Bonaventure leads the A-10 and ranks 18th nationally in scoring at 85.2 points per game. The Bonnies have reached the 90-point mark five times including two 100-point games. Only twice have they failed to reach 70 points.

Mobley Sprints Out Of Gate
By any measure, Matt Mobley is off to a fantastic start to his debut season at St. Bonaventure. The 6-3 junior guard is fourth in the Atlantic 10 (35th nationally) in scoring at 20.5 points per game. He is also fifth in the A-10 in three-point field goals (2.8 per game). Mobley is doing much more than just scoring -- he is also averaging 6.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. He is ninth in the A-10 in rebounding, and the second-leading rebounder among A-10 guards. Mobley's production is not a surprise. He practiced with the Bonnies last season after transferring from Central Connecticut, where he averaged 17 points per game as a sophomore and was named the Northeast Conference's most improved player. Mobley had four games of 30-plus points that season.

Andoh Brings Offense
Senior David Andoh battled a stress fracture in his foot over the summer that set him back at the start of practice, but as he has gotten in better shape, Andoh has shown he can be very productive. Over the past eight games, Andoh averaged 12.5 points per game, going 37-68 (.545) from the field. He scored a season high 18 points against Canisius.

Ironmen
Matt Mobley and Jaylen Adams are not only the Bonnies' leading scorers, they are also setting incredible standards for stamina. Mobley leads the nation in minutes per game (38.6) while Adams is 11th (36.6).

Free Throws Continue To Be A Plus
Last season, St. Bonaventure set a school record with a .773 free throw percentage. That good shooting at the line has carried over into this season. Entering the Dayton game, the Bonnies are at .775 at the charity stripe, which is 11th best in the country and leads the A-10. Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley both ranks in the top 10 in the conference in free throw percentage. The Bonnies have made 42 more free throws than their opponents.
