The Starting Five Notes + One
1. Tuesday night at the Reilly Center, St. Bonaventure returns to action after its A-10 schedule bye to host Saint Joseph's in the first of two meetings between these longtime Atlantic 10 rivals this season. The Bonnies won three of their last four games and stand in a tie for fifth place in the A-10. This will be the Bonnies' first home game since Jan. 7 and first with students on campus since Dec. 10.
2. In his first year as a starter, senior Denzel Gregg is playing better than any point in his career, including last season when he was co-Sixth Man of the Year in the Atlantic 10. He is among the A-10 leaders in rebounding, blocks and field goal percentage and has become a reliable scorer with 14 games in double figures. His development over his four-year career has been remarkable. Gregg is averaging nearly four points more per game than he did last year.
3. The backcourt of Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley is the fourth highest scoring teammate tandem in the country, averaging 41.7 points per game. Adams leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 15th nationally in scoring (21.8). He also leads the Atlantic 10 in assists and is second in three-point field goals. Mobley ranks fourth in the A-10 at 19.9 points per game and is the Bonnies' second-leading rebounder. Together, they fuel the A-10's top scoring offense (81.2 points/game).
4. Freshman forward Josh Ayeni set season highs with 16 points and seven rebounds in the win over Fordham. He was 12-13 at the free throw line. Ayeni had been a starter in the 14 games prior to then, but came off the bench against the Rams and then again at Saint Louis.
5. The win over Fordham gave coach Mark Schmidt sole possession of second place on the program's coaching wins list. Schmidt, the 2016 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, now has 158 career wins, two ahead of Jim Satalin and trailing only Larry Weise (202).
6. Both coaching staffs will wear sneakers Tuesday as part of the Coaches Vs. Cancer "Suits And Sneakers" awareness week Jan. 23-29.
Series Notes:
This will be the 71st meeting all-time between these long time Atlantic 10 rivals. The Hawks hold a 43-27 lead in the series, but the Bonnies have won the last five meetings. Last year, the Bonnies won both meetings in dramatic fashion, 83-73 in Philadelphia behind Jaylen Adams' 31 points and 98-90 in Rochester when Marcus Posley scored 47 points. The first-ever meeting between the schools was in 1958.
Saint Joseph's Notes:
• In December, Saint Joseph's was rocked by the loss of leading scorer Shavar Newkirk to a season-ending knee injury. The Hawks have remained very competitive but have dropped close decisions to Richmond and George Mason, also falling to Rhode Island and UMass. Saint Joseph's played last Saturday and defeated Big 5 rival Penn 78-71.
• Wing James Demery (14.9 ppg) and guard Lamarr Kimble (14.7) are the top scorers for a team that is very good at getting to the free throw line. The Hawks have attempted 412 free throws to their opponents' 279. Freshman forward Charlie Brown (11.3 ppg) is one of the A-10's top rookies and is St. Joseph's best three-point shooter at .376.
St. Bonaventure's Last Game: Bonnies 71, Saint Louis 52
A dominating first half and the return of junior point guard Jaylen Adams from a two-game injury layoff sparked St. Bonaventure to a 71-52 win at Saint Louis on Tuesday night. The Bonnies took control with a 21-3 run midway through the first half en route to a 46-15 lead by halftime. Adams tied the school record with 14 assists and scored 13 points. He had sat out the past two games with an ankle injury. Matt Mobley led all scorers with 23 points, as he made six three-pointers. LaDarien Griffin was a huge spark off the bench with six points, four rebounds and a career best five steals. David Andoh scored 10 points and Idris Taqqee finished with nine. The Bonnies held a 37-23 advantage in rebounds as they improved to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic 10.
Gregg Provides Senior Leadership
Like many St. Bonaventure players before, Denzel Gregg's career has been marked by improvement, a testament to the program's player development. A fan favorite for his highlight-reel dunks and blocks, the A-10's coaches named him the co-Sixth Man of the Year in 2015-16. The team's only four-year senior, the 6-7 forward has scored in double figures 14 times. His 13.2 average for the year is more almost four points a game better than last year. At the same time, Gregg continues to be a factor on both ends of the floor. He is third in the A-10 in rebounding (7.7) and second in the A-10 in blocked shots (1.9/game). Five of his six career double-doubles have been this season. Gregg stands fifth all-time at Bona's in blocked shots with 117.
Mobley Instant Offense
By any measure, Matt Mobley has provided instant offense in his debut season at St. Bonaventure. The 6-3 junior guard is fourth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 19.9 points per game. He is also third in the A-10 in three-point field goals (3.0 per game), fourth in three-point percentage (.406) and eighth free throw percentage (.837). Mobley is doing much more than just scoring -- he is also averaging 6.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He is 10th in the A-10 in rebounding, and the second-leading rebounder among A-10 guards. Mobley's production is not a surprise. He practiced with the Bonnies last season after transferring from Central Connecticut, where he averaged 17 points per game as a sophomore and was named the Northeast Conference's most improved player. Mobley had four games of 30-plus points that season.
Adams Top 15 In Nation In Scoring and Assists
Jaylen Adams earned plenty of preseason accolades (see further notes below) and he's lived up to the hype. Adams, who sat out the Richmond and Fordham games with a sprained ankle, is 14th in the nation in scoring (21.3 ppg) and eighth nationally in assists (6.7 apg). He also is tied for second in the Atlantic 10 in three-pointers (3.0/game), sixth in steals (1.9) and 10th in three-point percentage (.390). Adams returned from his ankle injury at Saint Louis and scored 13 points with 14 assists, tying the school record he already shares. Adams has 10 games of 20 points or more on the year including a pair of 31-point performances. He has been named the Player of the Week in the Atlantic 10 Conference once.
Offense Stays Hot, Leads A-10
The Bonnies averaged 77.9 points per game last season, the best average during coach Mark Schmidt's tenure and the third-highest scoring average in the A-10. Before that, Schmidt's highest-scoring team was in 2013-14 (73.4). This season, the Bonnies have clicked on offense despite having so many new players. Led by guards Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley, St. Bonaventure leads the A-10 and ranks 31st nationally in scoring at 81.6 points per game. The Bonnies have reached the 90-point mark five times including two 100-point games. Only three times have they not reached 70 points.
