The Starting Five Notes
1. Wednesday night, St. Bonaventure visits Duquesne for the first game of this year's home-and-home series. The Bonnies, who are tied for fourth place in the Atlantic 10, look to bounce back from a loss at Rhode Island. This game completes a stretch where the Bonnies play four of six on the road.
2. St. Bonaventure's defense has improved in A-10 play, primarily over the past four games as the Bonnies allowed an average of only 59.7 points per game. In their eight A-10 games, the Bonnies have allowed an average of 69 points per game compared to 77 points per game over their 12 non-conference games.
3. The backcourt of Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley is the fourth-highest scoring teammate tandem in the country, averaging 40.9 points per game. Adams is second in the Atlantic 10 and ranks 16th nationally in scoring (21.8). He also leads the Atlantic 10 in assists and is third in three-point field goals. Mobley ranks fourth in the A-10 at 19.1 points per game and second in three-pointers. Together, they fuel the A-10's top scoring offense (79.7 points/game).
4. In his first year as a starter, senior Denzel Gregg is playing better than any point in his career, including last season when he was co-Sixth Man of the Year in the Atlantic 10. He is among the A-10 leaders in rebounding, blocks and field goal percentage and has become a reliable scorer with 15 games in double figures. Gregg has six double-doubles this season.
5. Freshman forward Josh Ayeni has played perhaps his best basketball of the season the past four games, when he moved into the sixth man role. Ayeni, who has started 14 games, averaged 10.1 points over the last four games. He hit the go-ahead jumper against Saint Joseph's.
Series Notes:
This will be the 117th meeting between the longtime A-10 rivals. St. Bonaventure has claimed seven of the last nine meetings but trails in the all-time series 59-57. The Bonnies are 2-4 in their last six visits to Duquesne. The series dates to 1920.
Duquesne Notes:
• Duquesne lost at Richmond 101-90 last Saturday, its fifth consecutive loss. The Dukes' last win was Jan. 11 at home over Saint Louis. Duquesne is tied for last in the A-10.
• A young team, the Dukes start two freshmen, forward Isiaha Mike and guard Mike Lewis II. Mike was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week for the third time after he scored 23 points against Richmond. Lewis leads Duquesne in scoring at 12.9 points per game, while Mike averages 10.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game with 21 blocked shots. Mike has also won three A-10 Rookie of the Week awards.
• Emile Blackman, who faced the Bonnies as a member of Niagara's roster the last three years, is now at Duquense as a graduate transfer. He averages 12 points per game. Tarin Smith, a sophomore guard, averages 9.7 ppg.
