Complete St. Bonaventure Game Notes (PDF)

The Starting Five Notes
1.  St. Bonaventure hosts George Mason in a nationally-televised game between two of the A-10's top teams. The conference's top scoring team, the Bonnies look to bounce back from a loss to Dayton, while the Patriots are the surprise of the A-10 with 11 wins.
2.  The backcourt of Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley is the third highest scoring teammate tandem in the country, averaging 43.8 points per game. One of the top 50 candidates for the John Wooden Award, Adams leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks third nationally in scoring (23.4). He also leads the Atlantic 10 in assists and is second in three-point field goals. Mobley ranks fourth in the A-10 at 20.5 points per game and is the Bonnies' second-leading rebounder. Together, they fuel the A-10's top scoring offense (84.4 points per game).
3.  Senior Denzel Gregg has joined Adams and Mobley to form a superb "Big 3". In his first year as a starter, Gregg is averaging 12.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game with four double-doubles. He is second in the A-10 in blocks and leads the A-10 in offensive rebounds.
4.  After a relatively quiet start, senior forward David Andoh came on strong the past month. He scored in double figures six of the past nine games, giving the Bonnies a reliable scoring option off the bench.
5.  Coach Mark Schmidt is within two wins of passing Jim Satalin for second place on the program's coaching wins list. Schmidt, the 2016 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, has 155 career wins including two 20-win seasons in the last five years.

Series Notes:
This will be just the seventh meeting between the schools. The Bonnies have won four of the six games in the series including all three since Mason joined the A-10 in 2013-14.

Mason Notes:
• George Mason is the surprise of the Atlantic 10, already matching its win total (11) from last season. The Patriots were chosen to finish 12th in the conference this year but are 1-1 in the A-10 after an 86-81 home win over UMass on Wednesday.
• George Mason thrives on getting to the free throw line; the Patriots have made more free throws than their opponents have attempted.  The Patriots are also the top rebounding team in the A-10 with a +8.0 margin.
• Senior guard Marquise Moore led George Mason with 24 points and nine rebounds in that win. He has been the breakout player in the A-10, leading the conference in rebounding (10.6 per game) despite standing just 6-2. Moore also leads the Patriots in scoring at almost 18 points per game, good for eighth in the A-10.
• Point guard Otis Livingston and senior power forward Jalen Jenkins have also been keys in Mason's fast start. Livingston is the team's second-leading scorer at 15 points per game. He has 52 assists and tops the club in three-point shooting (38 percent, 26 made 3FGs). Jenkins is anchors the middle, averaging 11 points and six rebounds per game.

Adams Gets Better and Better
Jaylen Adams earned plenty of preseason accolades (see further notes below) and he's lived up to the hype. Adams is third in the nation in scoring (23.4 ppg), leads the Atlantic 10 in assists (6.1 apg) and is second in three-pointers (3.2/game). Adams has 10 games of 20 points or more on the year including a pair of 31-point performances. After a slow start shooting, he went 36-78 (.461) from three-point range over the past nine games.

Gregg Provides Senior Leadership
Like many St. Bonaventure players before, Denzel Gregg's career has been marked by improvement, a testament to the program's player development. A fan favorite for his highlight-reel dunks and blocks, the A-10's coaches named him the co-Sixth Man of the Year in 2015-16. The team's only four-year senior, the 6-7 forward is off to a strong start to his final year. He has scored in double figures 10 of the past 11 games. His 12.6 average for the year is more than three points a game better than last year. At the same time, Gregg continues to be a factor on both ends of the floor. He is fifth in the A-10 in rebounding (7.5) and second in blocked shots (2.2/game). Dec. 17 in the win over Niagara, Gregg became just the fifth player in program history to reach 100 career blocked shots. He stands fifth all-time at Bona's in that category with 113.

Ayeni Shows Promise
Freshman forward Josh Ayeni has earned a starting spot -- rare for a first-year player in most programs but perhaps even moreso at St. Bonaventure. He played very well in the Lone Star Showcase. averaging 8.6 points and 4.3 rebounds over the three games there. While he has battled foul troubles throughout the year, Ayeni has shown the ability to stretch the floor with his shooting touch. He set a season high with 12 points against Dayton Jan. 3. A late signee for the Bonnies this past summer, Ayeni is a native of Nigeria who played high school basketball at St. Frances (Md.), a team in the same league as Jaylen Adams' Mount St. Joseph.

Griffin Seizes Opportunities
Sophomore LaDarien Griffin usually takes full advantage of his opportunities to play. The prime example of that came Dec. 17, when he made his first career start in the Bonnies' win over Niagara. In 28 minutes, he grabbed a career high nine rebounds. His prior career best was four boards. The Jacksonville, Fla., native also scored four points. At UMass, Griffin earned 19 minutes and had six points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Earlier this season, the Bonnies turned to Griffin for a spark against Arkansas Little Rock and he scored a career high 15 points. Griffin is averaging 3.5 points and 2.6 rebounds this season and has played in 11 games, the same number of games he played in all of last season.

Ironmen
Matt Mobley and Jaylen Adams are not only the Bonnies' leading scorers, they are also setting incredible standards for stamina. Mobley leads the nation in minutes per game (38.6) while Adams is 12th (36.8).

Free Throws Continue To Be A Plus
Last season, St. Bonaventure set a school record with a .773 free throw percentage. That good shooting at the line has carried over into this season. Even after an off game against Dayton, the Bonnies are at .764 at the charity stripe, which is 19th best in the country and second in the Atlantic 10. Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley both rank in the top 10 in the conference in free throw percentage. The Bonnies have made 41 more free throws than their opponents.

Getting On The Glass
Not being the tallest team, nor the most experienced on its front line, has not meant that St. Bonaventure is not an effective rebounding team. In fact, the Bonnies rank second in the A-10 in offensive rebounds at 13.0 per game. They are also are fourth in the conference in rebounding margin (+3.1 per game). St. Bonaventure has won the rebounding battle in 10 of its 14 games and is 7-3 when outrebounding its opponent.
