Box Score PITTSBURGH – A short-handed St. Bonaventure men's soccer team battled to a 1-0 victory in double overtime defeating Duquesne with a strike by junior Isaiah Barrett in the 102nd minute Wednesday night.
Barrett was on the receiving end of a low cross from Nikko Richards in the second minute of the final overtime period, where Barrett was able to bury the shot in the back of the net. It marks Barrett's first career game-winning goal and second goal overall of the season.
The Bonnies were forced to 10 men after Paul Afful received his second yellow card in the 68th minute, resulting in the visitors playing a man down the rest of the way.
Despite the odds stacked against them, the Bonnies had chances to win in regulation.
Anthony Gaglianese had a shot from a set piece in the 86th minute that was saved by Duquesne goalkeeper Robbie McKelvey. Kosi Nwafornso gathered in the rebound, but his shot was also saved by McKelvey.
Bonnies goalkeeper Luke Iacobellis was able to keep the game in a scoreless deadlock with his work in the net. During in the 85th minute, Iacobellis came through with a diving save on a shot from Zach Hall to preserve the tie.
For the Bonnies, it marked more late magic as Wednesday's win came in the fifth double overtime game for the squad this season. St. Bonaventure has played a total of six overtime games so far, which ties the single season record for OT games in one season (2003, 2011). The Brown and White are now 4-1-4 in overtime games in the past two seasons.
The Bonnies snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory, improving their record to 5-8-2 and 1-4 in the Atlantic 10. Duquesne, meanwhile, falls to 3-9-1, 1-4.
St. Bonaventure will return home for Senior Day on Saturday when the Bonnies face off against George Mason. The match is set to start at 5:00 p.m. with the senior class being honored prior to kickoff.
