Marrero's Early Score Propels @BonniesWSoccer Past Duquesne, 1-0

Box Score

PITTSBURGH – Mariah Marrero scored early and the St. Bonaventure defense was able to make that lead stick in a 1-0 victory at Duquesne in Atlantic 10 women's soccer action on Thursday evening in the Steel City.

The junior transfer, who is in her first year with St. Bonaventure, was able to score her first goal in Brown and White off assists from Sabrina Sousa-Sampson and Marley Jarvis in the 18th minute of the contest. Sydney Cassagnol started the play off a free kick sending a ball into the box that was headed by Sousa-Sampson to Jarvis who delivered one touch to Marrero for the scoring strike.

That was enough for the Bonnies defense and goalkeeper Lauren Malcolm.

Despite Duquesne controlling the pace of play for the majority of the second half, the host Dukes could not break through as Malcolm made four saves for her fourth clean sheet of the season.

The Bonnies nearly added a second goal with eight minutes to play when a corner kick resulted in a set piece that saw Sabrina Sousa-Sampson force a leaping save from the Duquesne goalkeeper off a header attempt.

Cassagnol helped make the lead stick in the final seconds as Duquesne went on the attack with the clock ticking under one minute to play. The senior held strong with a good piece of defense in the box after a long service, taking the ball away from Duquesne's Katie O'Connor with a side tackle in a one-on-one situation, leaving a loose ball for Malcolm to scoop up as the Dukes' best late chance went by the boards.

For the Bonnies, it was a solid victory against a Dukes team that had been battling for home field advantage in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament. Duquesne falls to 10-5-2 overall and 6-3-0 in A-10 action. The Bonnies, meanwhile, improved to 2-5-2 in league play with their first road victory of the season.

St. Bonaventure will close its 2017 schedule at home Sunday at the Marra Athletics Complex as the Bonnies celebrate Senior Day. Kickoff Sunday afternoon is slated for 1 p.m. with the Bonnies honoring their five seniors at approximately 12:40 p.m.
