The Starting Five Notes
1. St. Bonaventure visits our nation's capital to face George Washington in the only meeting between these teams this season. The Bonnies come off a win over Saint Louis while GW lost to VCU by a point Wednesday.
2. Matt Mobley was named the Atlantic 10's co-Player of the Week after he averaged 28 points per game over the Bonnies' two games last week. He scored 34 points with a school record nine three-pointers Saturday against VCU. Mobley stayed hot Wednesday with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists in the win over Saint Louis.
3. The backcourt of Jaylen Adams and Mobley is the fourth-highest scoring teammate tandem in the country, averaging 42.2 points per game. Both players are closing in on 500 points for the season. Adams leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 13th nationally in scoring (21.4). He also leads the Atlantic 10 in assists. Mobley ranks fourth in the A-10 at 19.9 points per game and second in three-pointers.
4. In his first year as a starter, senior Denzel Gregg is playing better than any point in his career, including last season when he was co-Sixth Man of the Year in the Atlantic 10. He is among the A-10 leaders in rebounding, blocks and field goal percentage and has become a reliable scorer with 16 games in double figures. Gregg has seven double-doubles this season.
5. Freshman center Amadi Ikpeze has become a big factor over the last three games, averaging 6.0 points and 5.0 rebounds over that span. He had six points and a season high nine rebounds in the win over Saint Louis.
Series Notes:
This will be the 60th meeting in a series that George Washington leads 34-25. The Bonnies 6-22 all-time at the Smith Center. Their lone win at GW under coach Mark Schmidt was in 2011.
St. Bonaventure vs. GW: The Last Meeting
Feb. 13, 2016 at Reilly Center: Bonnies 64, GW 57
Behind the energy of a sold-out Homecoming crowd, St. Bonaventure got a key Atlantic 10 Conference win. The Bonnies' fifth win in a row solidified their hold on fourth place in the A-10 at 9-3. After being held scoreless in the first half, Jaylen Adams led the Bonnies in the second half with a team-high 19 points. Adams scored nine points in an 11-3 run that saw the Bonnies open a 51-38 lead with 7:41 remaining. From there, maintained at least a nine point lead until the closing two minutes. The Colonials pulled within 59-55 with 1:05 left, but the Bonnies hung on by forcing two GW missed shots and making five out of six free throws.
GW Notes:
• George Washington lost to VCU at home on Wednesday 54-53 on a controversial call with 0.4 seconds left that gave VCU two free throws, which the Rams converted to win the game. The loss was GW's third straight. The Colonials have played VCU and Richmond twice, going 0-4 in those games.
• Senior forward Tyler Cavanaugh leads GW in scoring (16.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.8). He is also a 35 percent shooter from three-point range (40-114).
• GW is 12th in the A-10 in scoring but fourth in scoring defense and second in rebounding margin.
• Junior swingman Yuta Watanabe (12.0 ppg), junior Jaren Sina (9.5) and sophomore guard Jordan Roland (7.4) are GW's other leading scorers. Roland, a Syracuse native like Cavanaugh, shoots 43 percent from behind the arc.
Ikpeze Provides Big Boost
Freshman Amadi Ikpeze had only played in three Atlantic 10 games before last week, but that changed quickly. Feb. 1 at Duquesne, when Denzel Gregg and Josh Ayeni both got in foul trouble, coach Mark Schmidt turned to Ikepze. The 6-10, 250-lb. center responded, scoring all eight of his points in the second half to help the Bonnies hold off the Dukes. Ikpeze tied his season high which he had set against UNC-Wilmington. Ikpeze then played 18 minutes against VCU and had four points, three rebounds and two blocks. In the Feb. 8 win over St. Louis, he had six points and a season-best nine rebounds.
Adams Top 15 In Nation In Scoring and Assists
Jaylen Adams earned plenty of preseason accolades (see further notes below) and he's lived up to the hype. Adams is 15th in the nation in scoring (21.4 ppg) and 13th nationally in assists (6.2 apg). He leads the A-10 in both categories. He also is third in the Atlantic 10 in three-pointers (2.8/game) and third in steals (2.1). Adams missed two games in January due to a sprained ankle, but returned at Saint Louis and scored 13 points with 14 assists, tying the school record he already shares. Adams has 13 games of 20 points or more on the year including a pair of 31-point performances.
Gregg Provides Senior Leadership
Like many St. Bonaventure players before, Denzel Gregg's career has been marked by improvement, a testament to the program's player development. A fan favorite for his highlight-reel plays, the A-10's coaches named him the co-Sixth Man of the Year in 2015-16. The team's only four-year senior, the 6-7 forward has scored in double figures 16 times. His 12.4 average for the year is three points a game better than last year. At the same time, Gregg continues to be a factor on both ends of the floor. He is fourth in the A-10 in rebounding (7.8) and third in blocked shots. Gregg leads all A-10 players in offensive rebounds (3.0). Seven of his eight career double-doubles have been this season. Gregg stands fifth all-time at Bona's in blocked shots with 126.
Mobley Instant Offense
By any measure, Matt Mobley has provided instant offense in his debut season at St. Bonaventure. The 6-3 junior guard is fourth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 19.8 points per game. He has 13 games with 20 points or more including two 30-point games, most recently his career high 34 against VCU. Mobley leads the A-10 in three-point field goals (3.0 per game), is sixth in three-point percentage (.408) and eighth in free throw percentage (.849). Mobley is doing much more than just scoring -- he is also averaging 6.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. He is 12th in the A-10 in rebounding, and the second-leading rebounder among A-10 guards. Mobley's production is not a surprise. He practiced with the Bonnies last season after transferring from Central Connecticut, where he averaged 17 points per game as a sophomore and was named the Northeast Conference's most improved player. Mobley had four games of 30-plus points that season.
500/500
Matt Mobley and Jaylen Adams are on pace to both top 500 points this season. All-time, St. Bonaventure has had 36 players top the 500-point plateau. Three of those were last year, when Adams (537), Marcus Posley (609) and Dion Wright (519) all did it.
Mobley's Three-Point Pace
Matt Mobley's 69 three-pointers already ranks 12th best in a single season in program history. The record is 101 by Chris Matthews in 2009-10.
