The Starting Five Notes
1. Two of the three teams tied for fifth place in the Atlantic 10 meet in the Reilly Center Wednesday when St. Bonaventure hosts La Salle. This will be the only meeting of the season between the top two scoring teams in the A-10. Four of the top 10 scorers in the A-10 will square off.
2. Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley are the fourth-highest scoring teammate tandem in the country, averaging 40.6 points per game. They each have 13 games of 20 points or more, and both are closing in on 500 points for the season. Adams leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 13th nationally in scoring (21.3). He also leads the Atlantic 10 in assists. Mobley ranks fourth in the A-10 at 19.3 points per game and leads the conference in three-pointers.
3. In his first year as a starter, senior Denzel Gregg is playing better than any point in his career, including last season when he was co-Sixth Man of the Year in the Atlantic 10. He is among the A-10 leaders in rebounding, blocks and field goal percentage and has become a reliable scorer with 16 games in double figures. Gregg has seven double-doubles this season.
4. Senior forward David Andoh broke out of a shooting slump at George Washington, scoring a season high 20 points on 10-15 shooting. Andoh had scored two points over his prior four games combined.
5. Freshman center Amadi Ikpeze has earned a spot in the rotation in the past four games, averaging 4.5 points and 4.0 rebounds over that span. The 6-10, 250-lb. Buffalo native had six points and a season high nine rebounds in the win over Saint Louis.
Series Notes:
This will be the 31st meeting in a series that La Salle leads 17-13. The Explorers claimed six of the last eight meetings.
St. Bonaventure vs. La Salle: The Last Meeting
Feb. 16, 2016 at Gola Arena: La Salle 71, Bonnies 64
St. Bonaventure's five game winning streak was snapped with a 71-64 loss to La Salle in Philadelphia. The Bonnies led 64-63 after Marcus Posley's three-pointer with 2:16 left, but La Salle then got back-to-back layups by Tony Washington and Jordan Price to go ahead 66-63. After Jordan Tyson made one of two free throws, Price scored inside with 34 seconds remaining to put the Explorers in control at 68-64. St. Bonaventure made just 37 percent of its field goal attempts on the night and was outrebounded 41-27. The Explorers were 11-22 from three-point range including 8-16 in the first half as they took a 35-32 lead at the break.
La Salle Notes:
• The Explorers have lost two of their last three games, coinciding with an injury to point guard Pookie Powell that kept him out of the last six games. La Salle lost 64-52 at home to Richmond on Saturday. They beat Fordham in the Bronx on Feb. 8 after falling at George Mason, 95-75, on Feb. 4.
• La Salle trails only St. Bonaventure in points per game among A-10 teams, at 78.1 points per game. B.J. Johnson leads the Explorers at 18.2 points per game. The Syracuse transfer shoots .411 from three-point range. Senior Jordan Price averages 16.5 points while Powell is at 13.4. La Salle also has capable scorers in Amar Stukes (8.3), Cleon Roberts (8.2).
• The Explorers are last in the A-10 in scoring defense (77.8) and second to last in field goal percentage defense (.472).
Adams Top 15 In Nation In Scoring and Assists
Even while earning the full attention of every opposing defense, Jaylen Adams continues to play at an All-Conference level. Adams is 13th in the nation in scoring (21.3 ppg) and 11th nationally in assists (6.4 apg). He leads the A-10 in both categories. Adams is also is third in the Atlantic 10 in three-pointers (2.7/game) and third in steals (2.1). Adams has 13 games of 20 points or more on the year including a pair of 31-point performances. He also has three double-doubles. In the Bonnies' win at Saint Louis, Adams tied the school record with 14 assists, the second time in his career he did that.
Gregg Provides Senior Leadership
Like many St. Bonaventure players before, Denzel Gregg's career has been marked by improvement, a testament to the program's player development. A fan favorite for his highlight-reel plays, the A-10's coaches named him the co-Sixth Man of the Year in 2015-16. The team's only four-year senior, the 6-7 forward has scored in double figures 16 times. His 12.0 average for the year is three points a game better than last year. At the same time, Gregg continues to be a factor on both ends of the floor. He is fifth in the A-10 in rebounding (7.8) and third in blocked shots. Gregg leads all A-10 players in offensive rebounds (3.1/game). Seven of his eight career double-doubles have been this season. Gregg stands fifth all-time at Bona's in blocked shots with 126.
Mobley Instant Offense
By any measure, Matt Mobley has provided instant offense in his debut season at St. Bonaventure. The 6-3 junior guard is fourth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 19.3 points per game. He has 13 games with 20 points or more including two 30-point games, most recently his career high 34 against VCU. Mobley leads the A-10 in three-point field goals (70 total, 2.9 per game), is sixth in three-point percentage (.402) and seventh in free throw percentage (.846). Mobley is doing much more than just scoring -- he is also averaging 6.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. He is 12th in the A-10 in rebounding, and the second-leading rebounder among A-10 guards. Mobley's production is not a surprise. He practiced with the Bonnies last season after transferring from Central Connecticut, where he averaged 17 points per game as a sophomore and was named the Northeast Conference's most improved player. Mobley had four games of 30-plus points that season.
Ikpeze Provides Big Boost
Freshman Amadi Ikpeze had only played in three Atlantic 10 games before last week, but that changed quickly. Feb. 1 at Duquesne, when Denzel Gregg and Josh Ayeni both got in foul trouble, coach Mark Schmidt turned to Ikepze. The 6-10, 250-lb. center responded, scoring all eight of his points in the second half to help the Bonnies hold off the Dukes. Ikpeze tied his season high which he had set against UNC-Wilmington. Ikpeze then played 18 minutes against VCU and had four points, three rebounds and two blocks. In the Feb. 8 win over St. Louis, he had six points and a season-best nine rebounds.
Adams Eyes 400 Career Assists
Jaylen Adams has 390 career assists. He will become only the eighth player in St. Bonaventure history to reach 400 assists.
Offense Leads A-10
As you would expect in the A-10 season, defenses tighten and scoring becomes tougher. While the Bonnies have not maintained their scoring pace of the non-conference (84.8), they are still averaging 78.4 points per game, which leads the A-10.
• The Bonnies have reached the 90-point mark five times including two 100-point games. Only five times have they not reached 70 points.
• In A-10 games, St. Bonaventure is at 72 points per game.
• Higher scoring teams are a trend at St. Bonaventure. Last season, the Bonnies averaged 77.9 points per game last season, the best average during coach Mark Schmidt's tenure and the third-highest average in the A-10. Before that, Schmidt's top scoring team was in 2013-14 (73.4).
Top 20 In Nation In Free Throw Pct.
Last season, St. Bonaventure set a school record with a .773 free throw percentage. That good shooting at the line has carried over into this season. The Bonnies are at .765 at the charity stripe, which is 19th best in the country and second in the Atlantic 10. Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley both rank in the top 10 in the conference in free throw percentage. The Bonnies have made 73 more free throws than their opponents.
