The Starting Five Notes
1. The top scoring team in the Atlantic 10 meets the top defensive team when St. Bonaventure and Dayton play for the second time this season. The Flyers took the first meeting in early January.
2. St. Bonaventure hopes to continue its push toward another strong Atlantic 10 finish, entering the weekend in a three-way tie for fourth place with George Mason and Rhode Island. The Bonnies, who have three road games and two home games remaining, have won 22 of their last 31 conference games and are 32-17 in A-10 games since the start of the 2014-15 season.
3. Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley are the fourth-highest scoring teammate tandem in the country, averaging 40.2 points per game. They each have 13 games of 20 points or more, and both are closing in on 500 points for the season. Adams leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 17th nationally in scoring (21.0). Mobley ranks fourth in the A-10 at 19.2 points per game and leads the conference in three-pointers.
4. Adams does much more than just score from his point guard position. He leads the A-10 and ranks ninth in the country in assists (6.7 per game). Adams totaled 23 assists over the past two games. He also ranks second in the A-10 in steals (2.2).
5. In his first year as a starter, senior Denzel Gregg is playing better than any point in his career, including last season when he was co-Sixth Man of the Year in the Atlantic 10. He is among the A-10 leaders in rebounding, blocks and field goal percentage and has become a reliable scorer with 17 games in double figures. Gregg comes off a career best 28-point performance in the win over La Salle, and he has seven double-doubles this season.
Series Notes:
• This will be the 33rd meeting between the teams; Dayton leads the series 22-10.
• The Bonnies' win at UD last February snapped UD's six-game win streak in the series.
• The first-ever meeting between the schools was in 1949.
St. Bonaventure vs. Dayton: The Last Meeting
Jan. 3, 2017 at Reilly Center: Dayton 90, Bonnies 74
The Flyers made 14 three-pointers – seven in each half – on 23 attempts and shot 51 percent from the field overall. St. Bonaventure trailed 35-31 at halftime but Dayton opened an 11-point lead early in the second half. The Bonnies could not pull any closer than six points the rest of the game. Jaylen Adams led all scorers with 23 points. He added six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Matt Mobley added 20 points. Freshman forward Josh Ayeni scored 12 points and Denzel Gregg added 10 points, nine rebounds and a career best five blocked shots. The Bonnies shot 37 percent overall (25-66) and were 17-27 at the free throw line.
Dayton Notes:
• The Flyers have won five games in a row and are tied with VCU for first place in the Atlantic 10 at 11-2. Dayton's last loss was Jan. 27 at VCU. At UD Arena, the Flyers are 12-1 this season including a 6-0 mark against A-10 opponents. Dayton received four votes in this week's AP Top 25 poll and is 29th in the RPI. Dayton is the A-10's top defensive team, allowing just 64 points per game.
• Senior swingman Charles Cooke (16.6 points per game) leads a balanced attack. Senior forward Kendall Pollard (13.7), senior point guard Scoochie Smith (12.9), senior guard Kyle Davis (8.5) and sophomore forward Xeyrius Williams (7.7) are the other top scorers, and sophomore Josh Cunningham (9.3) just returned from an ankle injury that had kept him out since November.
Offense Leads A-10
As you would expect in the A-10 season, defenses tighten and scoring becomes tougher. While the Bonnies have not maintained their scoring pace of the non-conference (84.8), they are still averaging 78.6 points per game, which leads the A-10.
• The Bonnies have reached the 90-point mark five times including two 100-point games. Only five times have they not reached 70 points.
• In A-10 games, St. Bonaventure is at 72.8 points per game.
• Higher scoring teams are a trend at St. Bonaventure. Last season, the Bonnies averaged 77.9 points per game last season, the best average during coach Mark Schmidt's tenure and the third-highest average in the A-10. Before that, Schmidt's top scoring team was in 2013-14 (73.4).
Defense Improves In A-10 Play
St. Bonaventure's defense has improved in the A-10 season, particularly over the past seven games when the Bonnies allowed an average of 64.7 points per game. Four times, St. Bonaventure held opponents to halves of 23 points or less, including a 15-point first half by SLU. In their 13 A-10 games, the Bonnies have allowed 69 points per game compared to 77 points per game over their 12 non-conference games.
Top 20 In Nation In Free Throw Pct.
Last season, St. Bonaventure set a school record with a .773 free throw percentage. That good shooting at the line has carried over into this season. The Bonnies are at .769 at the charity stripe, which is 13th best in the country and second in the Atlantic 10. Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley both rank in the top 10 in the conference in free throw percentage. The Bonnies have made 67 more free throws than their opponents.
Adams Top 15 In Scoring & Assists
Even while earning the full attention of every opposing defense, Jaylen Adams continues to play at an All-Conference level. Adams is 17th in the nation in scoring (21.0 ppg) and ninth nationally in assists (6.7 apg). He leads the A-10 in assists and is second in scoring to Jack Gibbs. Adams is also is fourth in the Atlantic 10 in three-pointers (2.7/game) and second in steals (2.2). Adams has 13 games of 20 points or more on the year, including a pair of 31-point performances, and also has four double-doubles. In the Bonnies' win at Saint Louis, Adams tied the school record with 14 assists, the second time in his career he did that. He had double-doubles in his last two games with 19 points, 11 assists at GW and 16 points and 12 assists vs. La Salle.
Adams Reaches 400 Career Assists
Jaylen Adams had 12 assists against La Salle, giving him 402 for his career. He is only the eighth player in St. Bonaventure history to reach that plateau.
Gregg Provides Senior Leadership
Like many St. Bonaventure players before, Denzel Gregg's career has been marked by improvement, a testament to the program's player development. A fan favorite for his highlight-reel plays, the A-10's coaches named him the co-Sixth Man of the Year in 2015-16. The team's only four-year senior, the 6-7 forward has scored in double figures 17 times, most recently a career high 28 in the win over La Salle Feb. 15. His 12.7 average for the year is three points a game better than last year. At the same time, Gregg continues to be a factor on both ends of the floor. He is fifth in the A-10 in rebounding (7.7) and third in blocked shots. Gregg leads all A-10 players in offensive rebounds (3.1/game). Seven of his eight career double-doubles have been this season. Gregg stands fifth all-time at Bona's in blocked shots with 126.
500 Points Plateau
Matt Mobley and Jaylen Adams are both closing in on 500 points this season. All-time, St. Bonaventure has had 36 players top the 500-point plateau. Three of those were last year, when Adams (537), Marcus Posley (609) and Dion Wright (519) all did it.
Mobley Sets Three-Point Pace
Matt Mobley's 74 three-pointers so far this year rank 11th best in a single season in program history. The record is 101 by Chris Matthews in 2009-10. Feb. 4 against VCU, Mobley broke the school record for three-pointers in a game with nine.
