Bonnies Come Up Just Short At Dayton, 76-72, Despite Adams' 35 Points

The Short Story
Jaylen Adams scored a career high 35 points, but St. Bonaventure came up just short at UD Arena on Saturday afternoon, falling 76-72.

The Bonnies led 34-28 at halftime, but fell behind early in the second half as Dayton, the Atlantic 10's top defensive team, increased the pressure. St. Bonaventure led 43-42 with 12:15 left, but Dayton re-took the advantage and led the rest of the way after that. 

Adams kept the Bonnies in the game, scoring 19 points in the second half. The Flyers, though, were 20-for-27 at the free throw line in the second half.

St. Bonaventure (16-10) dropped to 8-6 in the A-10 with four games remaining in the regular season. 

Matt Mobley scored 14 points and handed out six assists.  

How It Happened: 

  • Jaylen Adams got the visitors off to a fast start with eight of the Bonnies' first 10 points as St. Bonaventure led 10-6.
  • Matt Mobley drained a three-pointer from in front of the Dayton bench that pushed the lead to 20-9 at the 9:11 mark.
  • Mobley followed that triple with another, then Adams made a three-pointer after a steal to make it a 26-11 Bonnies lead.
  • Dayton scored nine straight points after that to cut the lead to 26-20 by the 5:18 mark.
  • The lead was down to four points but David Andoh scored inside against Charles Cooke with 25 seconds left to make it a 34-28 lead for St. Bonaventure at halftime.
  • Both teams tightened their defense early in the second half, and the Bonnies fell behind 39-35.
  • Dayton led 42-38 but the Bonnies scored five straight points, the last coming on a reverse layup by Adams, to retake a 43-42 lead.
  • The back-and-forth continued, though, as Dayton then opened a 55-41 edge.
  • The Bonnies twice pulled within one point but could not retake the lead.
  • Dayton pushed the margin to 64-57 with two minutes to play.
  • Three times in the last two minutes, the Bonnies cut the deficit to three. Adams made two three-pointers in the last 36 seconds, the latter trimming the Flyers' lead to 74-72 with :03 left.
  • Darrell Davis made two free throws to secure the win.

Up Next: St. Bonaventure will travel to Philadelphia to face Saint Joseph's next Wednesday, Feb. 22. Game time will be 7 p.m.
