CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team wrapped up action in the Charlotte First Pitch Classic with an extra-innings consolation game with Canisius, falling 3-1.
Kristen Hickling earned the start for the Bonnies in the circle, going 5.1 innings.
The Bonnies jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first as Elizabeth Enovitch doubled to left center and came home on an RBI single from Alexandra Piergustavo.
Hickling found her groove in the circle. Through the first five innings, she held the Griffs scoreless, surrendering just one walk with a strikeout.
The Griffs then knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly. Rylee Hehir came on to pitch for Hickling, and left two Griffs stranded on base.
Neither team mounted a serious threat through the final inning and a half, and the two squads took the 1-1 tie into extra innings.
Canisius broke the tie with two runs in the top of the eighth. They were able to bring home the runner placed on second as the Bona defense made a throwing error. An RBI double gave the Griffs their second run of the inning to put them up, 3-1.
The Bonnies came up in the bottom of the eighth with Enovich placed on second, but they were sent down in order.
Enovitch, Piergustavo, Hailey Blencowe, Karjel, Olivia Golay and Kiera Lorenzo made up the Bona hits.
Enovitch's first-inning double was her first career hit. She scored the lone Bona run, with that serving as her first career run scored as well.
St. Bonaventure will be in action next in the USF Under Armor Invite starting March 3.
