Bonnies Offense Comes Alive in 14-9 Victory Over Mount St. Mary's

Box Score

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – An eight-run fourth inning highlighted an offensive outburst helping the St. Bonaventure baseball team to its first victory of the season, 14-9, over Mount St. Mary's Monday afternoon in the Snowbird Classic.

The Bonnies (1-2) cranked out 12 hits on the day, led by three from newcomer Brandon Henshaw. The junior transfer also drove in three runs, walked and scored twice in a productive afternoon. Fellow junior transfer Mike Magnanti also delivered two hits and two RBIs, walking and scoring twice as well in a perfect afternoon at the plate. In all, the duo combined to go 5-for-6 with five RBIs out of the top two spots in the order.

Seniors Ryan MacCarrick and David Vaccaro also drove home two runs apiece.

St. Bonaventure struck early as MacCarrick set the tone with a drive to left center that he stretched into a double while Henshaw and Magnanti both scored ahead of him for a 2-0 lead in the first.

The Brown and White doubled the advantage in the second as Henshaw plated a pair of runs with a single to left.

Mount St. Mary's (1-3) got three runs back to make it a 4-3 score in the top of the fourth before the Bonnies broke the game wide open.

Bona sent 13 men to the plate during the home half of the fourth inning. Henshaw started the scoring by bringing home Alex Schutz with a single to right. Vaccaro then roped a double off the fence in left field to bring in both Henshaw and Magnanti.

Before the inning was over, Tyler Kelder, Matthew Williams, Ben MacDonald and Jeff Palczewski all had run-scoring singles while Magnanti also added a sacrifice fly to cap the uprising.

With the lead extended to 12-4, the Bonnies never relinquished control.

The Mount got within 12-8 with middle innings offense, but the Bonnies added insurance runs in the sixth as Schutz and Magnanti each registered run-scoring singles to end any thoughts of a rally.

Casey Vincent (1-0) earned the win with five innings of two-run ball on the mound, striking out four. Brian Pulli (2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K) and Donovan Moffat (2.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) each worked two innings of relief.

The Bonnies will renew acquaintances with Mount St. Mary's in the second of a three-game series Tuesday at 1 p.m.
