PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – A four-run sixth inning broke open what was a tie game and sent Western Michigan to a victory over the St. Bonaventure baseball team Tuesday morning at the Snowbird Classic, 8-3.
Western Michigan (2-8) led early, 3-0, after a run in the second and two in the third, but the Bonnies rallied in the middle innings.
The Bonnies (1-2) got a run back in the fourth on a run-scoring single from Jake Foden and pulled within one following an RBI base knock off the bat of Ryan O'Connor.
Down a run in the fifth, the Bonnies would tie the game.
Brandon Henshaw worked a walk with one away and moved to third as Tyler Kelder roped a double. Henshaw then scored the tying run on a ground out from Nolan Hayward.
The tie would not last long, though.
In the sixth, Jesse Forestell ripped a two-out, three-run home run to break the tie. A fourth run would later come home following an RBI single from Drew Devine and the Broncos never relinquished control.
Kelder stayed red hot at the plate, enjoying his best day as a Bonnie with a 4-for-5 effort and is now 8-for-14 in the team's first three games.
Tyler Germanowski picked up his first start with the Bonnies, working five innings while allowing three runs on four hits. The redshirt freshman struck out six opposing batters.
Casey Vincent (1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K) and Murphy O'Brien (1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K) each had scoreless innings of relief. As a staff, Bonnies pitchers struck out 11 batters.
After a day off, the Bonnies are back in action against Mount St. Mary's on Thursday.
