PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – St. Bonaventure saw a late lead erased and fell in a 10-inning heartbreaker, 5-4, to Mount St. Mary's Thursday afternoon at the Snowbird Classic.

Leading by a run heading for the eighth, St. Bonaventure (1-3) saw Mount St. Mary's (5-4) tie the game on a one-out sacrifice fly from Patrick Causa.

The Bonnies had the potential winning run at second in the ninth following a pinch-hit single from Matthew Williams, but had to settle for extra innings.

In the 10th, Causa came through again for the Mountaineers as he ripped a double with a runner on second to break the tie with what ultimately was the game-winning tally.

St. Bonaventure controlled the game early thanks to offense in the second and third innings.

In the Bona second, Jeff Palczewski started things with a walk and then stole second to get into scoring position, moving to third on a throwing error behind the plate.

Palczewski scored the first run of the game on a fielder's choice from Kevin Higgins. Higgins reached and went to third on a single from Nolan Hayward and came across on a run-scoring squeeze play from Alexander Ferlenda.

The Bonnies doubled their lead in the third – Alex Schutz and Brandon Henshaw each singled with one out and Schutz came home on a base hit off the bat of Tyler Kelder. One batter later, Henshaw scored as well when Palczewski delivered a base hit for an RBI and four-run advantage.

Mount St. Mary's got back into the game with a three-run fourth.

Bonnies starter Elijah Baez worked three hitless innings, but the Mountaineers picked up their first hit on a leadoff home run in the fourth, then used a Bona error and a Thomas Bramley single to get within a run.

The score would remain 4-3 as Murphy O'Brien was strong in relief for the Bonnies, working 2.2 scoreless innings while not allowing a base runner and striking out five.

Donovan Moffat tossed three innings out of the bullpen, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Brian Pulli (0-1) worked the 10th.

Baez finished with a line of 3.1 innings, striking out four during his time on the hill.

Schutz led the Bonnies by going 3-for-5 while Henshaw also collected a pair of hits.

Next up for the Brown and White is a Friday morning contest with Central Connecticut State.
