Dukes Take 5-1 Win in First Game of Non-Conference Set

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Va. – A four-run third was the difference as James Madison scored a 5-1 victory over the St. Bonaventure baseball team Thursday night.

Scoreless through the first two frames, the Dukes (22-17) broke the game open in the third inning.

A hit batter and a walk set the stage in the third as a single from Kyle Novak put the hosts on the board. A fielder's choice plated another run before a two-run bomb off the bat of Harry Brown put the Dukes ahead by four.

James Madison went yard in the fifth as well as a solo homer Brady Harju took one out for a 5-0 advantage.

The Bonnies got on the board in the seventh and made things interesting. Matthew Williams and Jeff Palczewski both walked and another free pass to Jake Foden loaded the bases with one out. Kevin Koziol brought Williams into score with a sacrifice fly, but a strikeout ended the threat without any further damage done.

Braydon Nelson (2-3) struck out four over 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits. Donovan Moffat was excellent in relief, striking out a career-high seven batters in 3.1 innings while allowing just one hit and two baserunners overall.

JMU right-hander Kevin Kelly silenced the Bona bats with seven punch outs over six innings, scattering three hits and walking one to move to 5-5 on the year.

The Bonnies and Dukes are slated to play again Friday night at 6 p.m.
