ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team captured a thrilling 1-0 victory in double overtime at an unseasonably warm Marra Athletics Complex Thursday night against Rhode Island.
The golden goal came from graduate student
Cristina Torres who lengthened her Atlantic 10 lead in scoring in emphatic fashion.
In the 103rd minute Torres handled a cross from forward
McKenna Robinson in the box, settled with the ball and wheeled it past the goalkeeper for the golden goal, her 10
th tally of the season.
Torres has scored three goals in the past two games, while Robinson has assisted on two of her scores.
The game was a defensive battle for both sides.
The Bonnies (6-6-3, 4-3-0) recorded three shots in the first half. Torres had the only shot on goal, while freshman midfielder
Chanel Alexander and defenseman
Kenzie Tarmino both tallied a shot.
St. Bonaventure had a couple chances late in the second half to score. The first chance came from midfielder
Tsianna Barnwell who was able to get the ball into box and take a shot, but the attempt was blocked by a Rhode Island defender. The second chance came off of a free kick from Tarmino right outside the box, but that shot was saved by the URI keeper.
The Bonnies finished the game with eight shots. Tarmino, Torres, and Barnwell led the Bonnies with two shots each.
Bona's freshman goalkeeper
Chiara Gottinger had another strong night in net recording five saves in the game. The effort marks four shutouts on the season for the first-year goalkeeper.
Rhode Island (4-7-2, 3-3-1 A-10) finished the game 13 shots. Sophomore midfielder Tess O'Connell recorded both her shots on net, while fellow midfielder Alyssa Fleming tallied two shots with one being on goal.
The Bonnies look to continue their winning streak at home on Sunday, Oct. 17 to take on visiting Dayton. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
