ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. –
Cristina Torres netted her Atlantic 10 leading seventh goal to lead the St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Saint Joseph's Sunday afternoon.
The Bonnies (4-6-3, 2-3-0 A-10) were able to capitalize off of a foul inside the box that led to a penalty kick. In the 30
th minute graduate Torres converted the penalty kick goal into a 1-0 lead for the Bonnies, which would end up being the deciding goal of the game.
St. Bonaventure was able to put a lot of pressure on Saint Joseph's in the first half, tallying eight shots on goal. Freshman
Chanel Alexander recorded three shots with one being on goal, while Torres record two shots for the Bonnies in the first half.
The Hawks (2-9-2, 2-3-0 A-10) had five shots in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Natalie Nevins had the only shot on goal for Saint Joseph's.
The second half was a defensive battle for Bonaventure. Saint Joseph's had a couple opportunities off of corner kicks, but were denied by St. Bonaventure defenders and freshman goalkeeper
Chiara Gottinger.
St. Bonaventure was looking to extend their lead in the second half and had a couple potential scoring chance. Alexander had a couple shots on net that were saved by the Hawks goalkeeper. In the 47
th minute junior midfielder
Christine Napoli received the ball in the box off of a header and was able to strike the ball well, but right into the arms of the goalkeeper.
Alexander finished the game with six shots with three of them being on goal, while Napoli recorded two shots on goal for Bonaventure. Gottinger recorded six saves in net en route to her fourth shutout of the season.
The Bonnies will be back on the road next Sunday to take on Davidson. The game is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
