Akuazaoku Scores To Help Bonnies Draw at UMass, 1-1

AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore Umechi Akuazaoku found the back of the net to help the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw on the road at UMass Saturday afternoon.

The Bonnies (3-8-3, 0-4-2 A-10) fell behind early but quickly created the game-tying goal in the first half against a UMass side which is unbeaten in conference play this year.

In the 22nd minute, Rafael Pereira found Akuazaoku in the scoring area where the sophomore punched home the goal, marking his second goal of the season and tying the game at 1-1.

For Pereira, his assist ties him for the team-high with three helpers this season.

The Minutemen (6-1-7, 1-0-5 A-10) opened the scoring early in the first half, netting the first goal in the 15th minute off the foot of Nick Zielonka.

The Bonnies had a pair of chances to take the lead in the 59th and 60th minutes with shots coming from Akuazaoku and Luca Nicastro. Both shots, however, were turned away by UMass goalkeeper Matt Zambetti.

Junior Jules Dechert earned the start in net for the Bonnies, turning away five UMass shots in the contest.

The Bonnies travel to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph's in the final road contest of the regular season Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 p.m.
