AKRON, Ohio – Maddie Mazur scored with 1:16 remaining to draw the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team within one Sunday afternoon at Akron, but the Bonnies could not find the equalizer in the final seconds as the Zips won a defensive battle, 6-5.
For Akron, it avenged a 13-12 Bonnies win on home turf between the same two teams last March.
The Zips scored the game's first three goals in their season-opener before Kassi Hogan got the Bonnies on the board off an assist by Jordan Rokitka with 9:38 to play in the first half.
After an Akron goal to stretch ahead by three again, the Bonnies went to halftime down just two, 4-2, following the first career goal from Andrianna Gruttadauria.
St. Bonaventure drew even after two goals from Rebecca Howe, the first coming with 4:41 left in the third quarter followed by the tying strike, off an assist by Mazur, with 13:08 remaining.
With the game tied, Anjali Silverheels gave Akron the lead back as she scored with 8:21 remaining. Mackenzie Kirwan found the back of the net two minutes later to draw ahead by two tallies.
Mazur brought the Bonnies back within one, scoring off a pass from Abby Hiltz, but that would finish the scoring one shy of the Zips.
Hayley McIntyre played well in net for the Bonnies, earning the start and making 13 saves. Ashley Lapp registered the win in the cage for the Zips with eight stops.
Nora Anderson handed out two assists on the day for the Bonnies while Emily Mahon caused two turnovers on the defensive end and Kassi Hogan scooped up a team-high three groundballs.
The Bonnies (0-2) return to action next Sunday at noon at Pittsburgh.
