PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Two big innings from the Thundering Herd thwarted the St. Bonaventure baseball team in its first game of 2022 Friday afternoon as Marshall outlasted the Bonnies, 11-7, in 10 innings at Centennial Park.
Marshall (2-3) broke open a scoreless tie by pushing six runs across in the fourth and led 6-1 heading for the seventh when the Bonnies mounted an impressive rally.
Back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Garrett Boldt and Jackson DeJohn got things started.
In the eighth, the Bonnies continued to roar.
Freshman Jacob Yager made his first collegiate hit a memorable one as he smacked a single to right, plating both Pierce Hendershot and Thomas Grilli for a 7-6 score.
Branden Myers led off the last of the ninth with a single to left before stealing second to move into scoring position. He would come home with the tying run as Matthew Williams came through with a single to center for a 7-7 deadlock. A fielding error allowed Williams to move to second with no outs, but Marshall reliever Cole Agemy struck out three consecutive batters with the winning run in scoring position to force extra innings.
In the 10th, Marshall broke the game open with four runs, all scored with two outs, to take the win in extra frames.
Bona's tallied 12 hits including two each from Myers and Brendyn Stillman.
Liam Devine started and worked 3.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Tripp Breen tossed four solid innings out of the Bonnies pen as just one unearned run was charged against him. The junior walked three and struck out four. Ryan O'Connell threw two scoreless innings before Marshall broke through with two down in the 10th.
Agemy earned the win for the Herd with three innings of one-run ball and six strikeouts. Cole Williams posted three hits and Ryan Leitch drove in three runs.
Friday marked the first game for the Bonnies under interim head coach B.J. Salerno.
St. Bonaventure and Marshall will meet again Sunday afternoon, but first the Bonnies are slated to meet Merrimack for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Centennial Park.
