PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Marshall scored early and never looked back on the way to an 11-1 victory Sunday over the St. Bonaventure baseball team at the Snowbird Classic.
Friday's first game between the Herd (5-3) and the Bonnies (0-4) was a thriller, going extra innings before Marshall pulled out a win in the 10th.
Unfortunately for the Bonnies, Sunday's contest would not be nearly as close as Marshall led 4-0 after two innings and broke the game open with three in the fourth.
That would be more than enough for Marshall starter Ryan Capuano who stifled the Bonnies bats all day, allowing just one hit in his six scoreless frames while striking out nine and not walking a single hitter.
Matthew Williams was the only Bonnies player to collect a hit against Capuano while Thomas Grilli and Danny Manion accounted for the other hits on the day. Manion doubled home Grilli with a shot to center in the eighth for Bona's run.
Jagger Nucci struck out three batters in his inning on the hill and Jack Putney also threw two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and fanning two.
St. Bonaventure now will remain in the Sunshine State to play at Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Bonnies will wrap up their season-opening southern trip with a three-game series at Alabama State Friday and Saturday.
