OLEAN, N.Y. – A sparkling 3-under 67 from graduate student Danny Gianniny led St. Bonaventure to a record day Saturday afternoon at Bartlett Country Club.
The Bonnies posted a program-record team score of 272 to lead Colgate by eight shots in head-to-head play after the opening round of the Duel at Bartlett. Bona's took advantage of favorable scoring conditions, finishing at 8-under par for the day.
St. Bonaventure's 272 total surpasses the previous school record of 278 set in 2016 in the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational at The Links at Hiawatha Landing outside Binghamton. Bona's 8-under ranks second in school history vs. par, behind only a 10-under score in the Binghamton Invite six years ago and tying their performance this past fall in The Murray Cup.
Gianniny showed the way with the best score of any player on the day. The fifth-year Bonnies star made 14 pars, two birdies, and recorded one of three eagles in the field. That marked his 13th career eagle, good for the Bonnies all-time record.
Jack Geise carded 2-under 68, also with an eagle to his credit. Erik Stauderman and Lance Sininger were both in red figures as well at 68 and 69 respectively. Christian Chapman also posted 70 for the Bonnies.
Colgate finished at even-par 280 for the day, led by Wyatt Petersen who turned in a 68.
The two teams wrap up the match with 18 holes Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.
