ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure men's basketball head coach Mark Schmidt has announced the latest addition to a talented Bonnies recruiting class: 6-foot-10 power forward/center Melian Martinez who will join the program for 2022-23 as a true freshman.
"Melian is an exciting addition to the program. He is tremendously athletic, someone who runs the floor as well as any player at his position since I've been here," Schmidt said. "His ability to block shots and protect the rim will bring an intimidating presence to our defense. He has tremendous upside and endless potential. We are thrilled he decided to join the Bonnies!"
Martinez spent the past year at North Florida Educational Institute in Jacksonville where he helped guide the program to a 24-8 overall record. The Dominican Republic native averaged 8.1 points and a team-best 9.9 rebounds as well as 4.2 blocks per contest over the past year.
He was key to NFEI reaching the final four of the Florida High School Athletic Association state championships this past season, improving from 9-17 the year before his arrival.
He becomes the 12th scholarship player on the Bonnies roster for this upcoming season, joining fellow freshmen in forwards Barry Evans Jr. and Yann Farell as well as transfer guards Kyrell Luc (Holy Cross), Moses Flowers (Hartford), Daryl Banks III (Saint Peter's) and forwards Max Amadasun (Pittsburgh), Chad Venning (Morgan State) and Anquan Hill (Fairleigh Dickinson) as well as returners Justin Ndjock-Tadjore, Anouar Mellouk and Brett Rumpel.
