NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – St. Bonaventure women's soccer graduate forward Cristina Torres has earned a selection to the 2022 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Preseason All-Conference Team.
The San Juan, Puerto Rico native is coming off a stellar first season in the Brown and White, being named to the 2021 Atlantic 10 First Team and the All-Academic Team. Her A-10 First Team selection a season ago marked the first for a Bonnies player since Shannon Van Ripper earned the honor in 2012.
Last season, Torres led the Atlantic 10 and was 11th in the NCAA with 13 goals. Also, she paced the A-10 in shot accuracy (0.633), and tied for first in game-winning goals with four.
Torres ranked second in the A-10 in points (26), points per game (1.37), and goals per game (0.68) last fall.
The 13 goals she totaled a season ago places Torres seventh all-time in single season St. Bonaventure women's soccer goals history as well.
Itala Gemelli of Dayton, Megan Nemec of Loyola Chicago, and Emily Gaebe of Saint Louis join Torres as forwards on the preseason all-conference team along with midfielders Abby Swanson (Loyola Chicago), Hannah Friedrich (Saint Louis), Abbie Miller (Saint Louis), and Anna Bagley (VCU). Defenders Alaina Abel (Loyola Chicago), Brionna Halverson (Saint Louis), Amber DiOrio (VCU), and goalkeeper Emily Puricelli (Saint Louis) round out the preseason All-Atlantic 10 team.
St. Bonaventure is projected to finish 13th according to the 2022 A-10 Women's Soccer Preseason Poll. The Bonnies finished fifth in last year's regular season standings, earning a bid to the A-10 Tournament with a 7-8-4 overall record including a 5-4-1 mark in conference play. Saint Louis picked up 14 of 15 first-place votes to be the preseason favorite, ahead of Dayton, Loyola Chicago, VCU and UMass. La Salle, Saint Joseph's, Richmond, Rhode Island and Duquesne, tied with George Washington, complete the top 10 with George Mason, Bona's, Davidson and Fordham rounding out the preseason coaches' poll.
The Bonnies are slated to begin the 2022 season on the road with a matchup against Marist on Thursday, Aug. 18. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
