Bonnies Begin 2022 Season With Pair of Road Matchups

The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team will travel to Marist College to open up the 2022 campaign on Thursday with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, the Bonnies will remain on the road with a 1:00 p.m. start at Cleveland State. 

PRESEASON ACCOLADES
Graduate forward Cristina Torres earned a spot on the 2022 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Preseason All-Conference Team.

The San Juan, Puerto Rico native is coming off a stellar first season in Brown and White, being named to the 2021 Atlantic 10 First Team and the All-Academic Team.

Last season, Torres led the Atlantic 10 and was 11th in the NCAA with 13 goals. Also, she paced the A-10 in shot accuracy (0.633), and tied for first in game-winning goals with four.

Torres ranked second in the A-10 in points (26), points per game (1.37), and goals per game (0.68) last fall.

NET PROTECTOR
Returning in goal for the Bonnies is sophomore Chiara Gottinger, whose first collegiate season netted her a selection on the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team and Atlantic 10 Second Team All-Conference squads.

The Pirching am Traubenberg, Austria native led the Atlantic 10 and ranked sixth nationally with 119 saves in 2021.

Gottinger matched the Bonnies all-time mark for shutouts with six in her debut season and also sits second all-time in the record books with a single-season goal against average of 1.19.

Also, her .832 save percentage ranked second in the A-10.

BACK FOR THE BROWN AND WHITE
Including Torres and Gottinger, head coach Steve Brdarski returns six other starters from last year's squad which qualified for the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

Other returning starters include: junior McKenna Robinson (10 starts/two goals/ four assists), sophomore Chanel Alexander (18 starts/one goal/two assists), senior Christine Napoli (19 starts/one goal), junior Lydia Choban (14 starts/one goal), senior Kenzie Tarmino (19 starts/two assists), and sophomore Bridget Kennedy (19 starts/tied for first on team with 1,811 minutes played).

Alexander was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team, tallying 1,266 minutes and ranking second on the team in assists (two), shots attempted (31), and shots on goal (14) in her debut season.

Key returning reserves from last season's squad include junior Alexa Martinos (14 games played/one goal), sophomore Kristin Pickard (19 games played/one assist) while seniors Clare Davis (19 games played), Amber Achladis (17 games played), and Haylee Smith (15 games played) each made an impact on the field for St. Bonaventure.

FRESH FACES
Going into the 2022 season, the Bonnies welcome the addition of 10 student-athletes to the roster.

Savanna Mondesir-Singh (defense), Avery Parks (midfield), Isabella Jeppesen (midfield), Abby Sindoni (forward/midfield), Adiana Cotroneo (midfield/defense), Allison Drake (midfield/defense), Hannah Walker (defense), Ava Myers (forward/midfield), Ami Komori (forward), and Maya Palmer (defense) will all be suiting up in the Brown and White for the first time this fall.

ABOUT MARIST
The Red Foxes finished the 2021 season with an overall record of 5-7-3 and
4-4-2 conference play.

Marist fell, 1-0, in the MAAC quarterfinals to Quinnipiac to close the season.

Three key returning players were named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team: Junior midfielder Amanda Caldarelli (2021 stats: 13 starts/four goals), senior defender Samantha Sturno (2021 stats: 14 starts/second on team with 1,426 minutes played), and graduate student goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner (2021 MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year/95 saves/.872 save percentage/14 goals allowed).

Marist is projected to finish tied for fifth with Iona (70 points), according to the 2022 MAAC Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll.

ABOUT CLEVELAND STATE
The Vikings ended last season with an overall record of 6-11-2 and a conference record of 5-5-1.

Cleveland State was defeated by Green Bay, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championships

All-League Second Team defender Essence Canady (15 games started) and All-Freshman Team goalkeeper Kyla Valaitis (53 saves/.757 save percentage/17 goals allowed) are both no longer a part of the team after being leaders for most of last season.

Senior forward Maddie Young returns this season after being the team leader with six points (two goals/two assists) a year ago, while Kathryn Ramicone tallied two goals and an assist.

In net Mollie McGuire (two games started/nine saves) is currently the only goalkeeper on the roster with playing experience.

UP NEXT
The Bonnies will take on Little Three rival Niagara on Thursday, Aug. 25 in a third straight road match. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
