The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team will host a pair of games this week starting with a matchup with Youngstown State on Thursday beginning at 5:00 p.m. On Sunday St. Francis Brooklyn will come to town for a contest that is scheduled to kickoff at 1:00 p.m. as their five-game homestand continues. Both games will be aired on ESPN+.
PUT ANOTHER "W" IN THE BOOKS
- The Bonnies earned their first two victories of the season against Little Three rival Niagara and Eastern Michigan this past week.
- On Thursday, sophomore Bridget Kennedy was able to get her head on a corner kick from freshman Ami Komori, beating the Niagara keeper in just the second minute of the game to give the Bonnies an early advantage and an eventual 1-0 victory.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Chiara Gottinger continued her outstanding start to the season by once again matching her career-high in saves with 13 and tallying her eighth career shutout.
- This shutout places the second-year keeper seventh all-time in Bonnies career shutouts, passing both Christine Carbone (1985-86) and Marnie Rice (1990-93) who each totaled seven in their careers.
- In the home opener against Eastern Michigan on Sunday Komori tallied her second collegiate goal, while senior Kenzie Tarmino secured the Bonnies 3-0 win by scoring her first career goal off of a free kick in the 88th minute.
ROOKIE HONORS
- Komori was selected as the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for her great play this past week.
- The Otsu, Japan native tallied a goal and an assist this past week to help lead the Bonnies to their first two victories of the season.
- The first-year forward worked past a pair of defenders and beat the keeper to give the Brown and White a 2-0 lead against Eastern Michigan.
- Through the first four games of the season, Komori leads the team in goals (two), points (five), shots (11), and shots on goal (six).
LEADING THE NATION
- Gottinger leads all Division I goalkeepers in total saves (39) and saves per games (9.75).
- The Pirching am Traubenberg, Austria native currently ranks second in the Atlantic 10 conference with a 93 percent save percentage and two shutouts this season.
ABOUT YOUNGSTOWN STATE
- The Penguins ended the 2021 season with an overall record of 2-11-5 and a conference record of 2-5-4.
- Last season seniors Regan LaVigna and Abriana Rondin tied for the team lead with two goals scored each, while LaVigna and junior Lianna Van Sice each tallied a pair of assists.
- Junior Brooklynn Kirkpatrick recorded 44 saves a year ago in eight games along with two shutouts.
- Youngstown State is projected to finish ninth in the Horizon League, according to the conference preseason coaches' poll.
- In their last game, Youngstown State fell 4-0 to Loyola (MD).
- This year senior Maddie Root scored the lone goal for the Penguins.
ABOUT ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN
- The Terriers finished last season with an overall record 5-8-6 and 3-4-3 in conference play.
- Senior Margaret Motolese returns as the second leading scorer on the team with three goals, while senior Izzy Gollette tallied two goals and two assists
- In net senior Klil Keshwar started all 19 games in 2021, recording 115 saves.
- St. Francis Brooklyn was picked seventh in the Northeast Conference (NEC) preseason coaches' poll.
- The Terriers dropped their last game, 3-1, against Iona this past Sunday.
- This season Gollette and Motolese have scored two goals each.
UP NEXT
The Bonnies will welcome Little Three rival Canisius to the Marra Athletics Complex on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
