Cross Country Teams Open 2022 Season By Hosting Little Three Championship

9/1/2022 10:00:00 AM

The St. Bonaventure men’s and women’s cross country teams will have the opportunity to open their 2022 seasons in a rare spot – a home meet.

This fall marks the year for the Bonnies to again host the Little Three Championship meet against local rivals Canisius and Niagara, the lone home event every three years for the squad, a tradition postponed in the rotation by the pandemic.

It’s an anticipated race every year given the tradition of the Little Three, but it again brings added excitement for Bona’s runners as an opportunity to run at home.

Note: Fans arriving to campus for the Little Three Championship on Sept. 3 are asked to enter through the West Entrance and use the general public parking lots as marked in the map here.

The 5K course will begin on the McGraw-Jennings Field complex between the baseball and soccer/lacrosse fields and wind its way through the Allegheny River Trail alongside campus. The women’s race is set for a 10:30 a.m. start with the men’s race following at 11:15 a.m.

The Bonnies women’s team will boast a nearly entirely new roster this fall.

Fifteen freshmen join the program this year – Faith Caldwell (Grand Island, N.Y.), Sarah Carroll (Weedsport, N.Y.), Claire Cuneo (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Riley Fronce (Meadville, Pa.), Molly Gipson (Toronto, Ontario), Jenna Gregory (Smethport, Pa.), Georgia Hanley (London, England), Meghan Litteer (Marlborough, Mass.), Adria Magnusson (Ridgway, Pa.), Abigail Mainville (Fulton, N.Y.), Brielle McShane (Marcellus, N.Y.), Abigail Principe (Chippewa, Pa.), Helena Roy (Center Moriches, N.Y.), Mary Trost (Rochester, N.Y.) and Mia Winters (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

“The recruiting class for the women’s team reminds me a lot of the recruiting class for the men last year when we had 11 freshmen on the men’s team and they really improved and impressed as the year went along. It’s an energetic freshman class for the women this year and I really like the work we’ve seen them put in so far," head coach Bob Macfarlane said. "They’ve come in with great attitudes and you can see that filtering to the older members of the team as well. They’re hardworking and we’re excited to see what they can do this year. There are a couple upperclassmen who should do very well and they’re going to be pushed to be better by several of our freshmen for sure."

Seniors Iris Archer, Amberlee Robertson, Lindsey Clawson

Iris Archer, Lindsey Clawson and Amberlee Robertson bring senior leadership to this year’s team.

A business major from nearby Allegany, N.Y., Clawson is in her fourth season with the program and posted top-10 program times in track for the outdoor 800 meters and 1500 meters as well as the indoor mile last spring. She is returning to the cross country course for the first time since her freshman year due to injuries and the pandemic, and she finished in the team’s top seven in five of six races in 2019.

Robertson returns for her fifth year with the program as a graduate student. She earned her undergraduate degree in political science with a minor in law and society and is pursuing a Masters in adolescent education. She’s served as a top performer for the program the past four years, ranking in the program’s 5K top-15 all-time individual times as well as the track 800, 1000, 1500 and mile top-10 marks.

Archer is an adolescence education major from Marlton, N.J. A three-year member of the program, she competed in four fall events last year and also ran track in the 800, 1500 and the mile, posting personal best marks last spring in the latter two events. A second generation Bonnie, her mother, Mary, attended St. Bonaventure as well.

Other returners include sophomore Camryn Cwiklinski, who finished in the team’s top-seven in four out of five meets last year during her debut season. Her 5K time of 20:47 in last year’s Little Three placed her second on the team in her first collegiate meet.

Fellow sophomore Olivia Ippolito had a strong freshman season as well, finishing in the team scoring during every event she ran last fall including a 5K PR of 20:39.

Junior Sophia Machowski also was a top runner for the Bonnies last year, placing in the top-seven four times during cross country season. Her 5K PR mark of 20:49 came at the Louisville Classic.

Also returning are juniors Lauren McGee and Emilie Weinbeck as well as Emily Peterson, who also was in the team’s top-seven at every meet last fall. Peterson’s 5K PR of 20:23 came in the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship.

Last year, the Bonnies men’s team was nearly completely new and they showed true flashes of promise throughout the entire 2021-22 academic year. Now mostly sophomores and juniors, the team is a much more veteran group this fall.

Sophomore Clay Peets put together one of the finest freshman seasons in program history last year, winning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week accolades three times before a strong track season as well. He finished in the team’s top-three in every event and led the team in all but one meet last year, running program top-five individual marks in both the 5K (15:42) and 8K (26:10).

“The men’s team has a couple of upperclassmen in Darion and Zane who can be very good and then those freshmen who are sophomores this year are going to be even better. Clay was outstanding last year. A couple of our freshmen are really impressing so far as well," Macfarlane said. "With that team you can see how the leadership of the upperclassmen is filtering throughout the team and we’re going to see a good mix of veterans and new faces in our top-seven throughout the fall."

Bonnies seniors Hayden Barry, Jacob Osswald, Ryan Murphy, Darion Gregory and Wyatt Hulsey

Senior Darion Gregory is a decorated Bonnies student-athlete, earning Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team honors in cross country, indoor and outdoor track last year as well as CoSIDA Academic All-Region accolades. He became the first Bonnies runner to ever achieve all of those awards in the same year. The environmental studies major from Smethport, Pa. also registered a top-five team finish in every cross country meet last fall and logged an 8K PR of 26:36 to move into the program’s top-10 individual times list. Though in a scrimmage 5K race during the pandemic, his Bona’s course time of 15:40 is the fastest in school history, setting a high bar he’ll look to surpass at this year’s Little Three.

Fellow seniors include Hayden Barry, Wyatt Hulsey, Ryan Murphy and Jacob Osswald.

A four-year member of the Bonnies from Avoca, N.Y., Barry ranks 12th in program history for the 5K (16:29) and eighth in the 8K (26:35.2) as well as 15th in the 10K (34:18). He also owns top-10 program individual times in track for the outdoor 3000, indoor mile and indoor 3000.

Hulsey, a finance major from Honeoye Falls, N.Y., is also a four-year member of the program and posted 5K and 8K PRs last year in cross country while also ranking in the program track top-10 for outdoor 1500 and indoor 800, 1000, mile and 4000 meter distance medley relay.

Murphy, a business major from Warwick, N.Y., is a four-year member of the program with top-10 program times for the indoor 600 and 5000 meters. A graduate student from Buffalo, Osswald is using his fifth year of eligibility this year. A standout in track, he has program top-10 individual times for the outdoor 3000, 10,000 and indoor 3000 and 5000 meters.

Sophomore Colin McCarthy was another freshman standout in 2021, posting a team top-seven mark in five meets.

Junior Brian Gleason has battled injuries during his first two collegiate seasons, but has been impressive when able to compete. He qualified for the Atlantic 10 Championship last season, finishing fifth for the team with an 8K time of 28:24. He finished 10th overall out of all competitors in last year’s Little Three with a 5K run of 16:32. Fellow junior Kieran Ryan has been a standout on the track, but was also in the team’s scoring seven in cross country at times last year.

Second-year runners include sophomores Drew Carlson, Jared Deno, Thomas Dachik, James Fitzmaurice, Conor Quinn and Owen Noecker while junior Henry Trost begins his third season with the program.

Newcomers in the freshmen class are Christian Figueroa (Burlington Township, N.J.), Aiden Holt (Fort Mitchell, Ky.), Ethan Luce (Lakewood, N.Y.), Casey Malloy (New Hartford, N.Y.), Alex Ryan (Ashburn, Va.), Aiden Scattergood (Ambler, Pa.) and Tyler Schott (Derby, N.Y.).
