ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team fell to Fordham, 1-0, in the first Atlantic 10 conference game of the season Thursday night at Marra Athletics Complex.
The Bonnies (2-1-5, 0-1 A-10) had a chance to end the half with a lead when senior
Amber Achladis fired a shot in the 43
rd minute, but Fordham's goalkeeper jumped and punched the ball over the crossbar for the save.
In the 57
th minute, Kristen Cocozza dribbled to the left of the box and took a shot that went by the diving try of sophomore goalkeeper
Chiara Gottinger into the back of the net.
Graduate student
Cristina Torres, who returned after missing the previous five non-conference games due to injury, tried to answer in the next minute of the game by dribbling into the box and blasting a shot off the hands of the Rams' goalkeeper.
Gottinger made several tremendous diving saves in the second half to keep Fordham's lead to only one goal.
The second-year goalkeeper finished the game with nine saves, bringing her season total to 67 stops. She is third in the nation and first in the conference in total saves. This marks her fifth game this season with nine or more saves.
Fordham challenged Gottinger throughout the night, owning a 31-12 margin in shots, but Gottinger kept the Bonnies in the contest with multiple impressive saves.
Senior
Kenzie Tarmino recorded four shots Thursday night to lead the Bonnies.
The Rams (2-6, 1-0 A-10) were led with five shots by Caroline Monahan.
Serena Mensah tallied six saves for Fordham.
The Bonnies will travel to Dayton this Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
