ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team couldn't hold off a persistent VCU offense, falling 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.
St. Bonaventure's defense stood tall against an unrelenting VCU attack for 75 minutes before letting up the game's lone goal. Junior goalkeeper
Chiara Gottinger and the Bona's back line thwarted off 14 first half shots from the Rams.
VCU (4-8-3, 3-4-1 A-10) ended their five-game scoreless streak as Kendyl Sarver found herself without a defender outside the 18-yard box and sent a high flying shot over Gottinger's head.
The loss drops St. Bonaventure to 2-6-6 on the year with a 2-4-2 mark in Atlantic 10 play. The Bonnies are currently 11th in A-10 standings with the top eight teams getting a postseason bid.
The Bonnies tried to find the equalizer in the final 15 minutes, but couldn't find the back of the net. Graduate student
Christine Napoli and sophomore
Ami Komori fired shots in the dwindling minutes of the match, but the Rams keeper stopped both attempts.
Gottinger saved five of six shots on net from the Rams. Junior defender
Bridget Kennedy took two looks at net in the second half, both off corner kicks, but sent each over the cross bar.
The Bonnies have two regular season games remaining as they head to George Mason on Thursday and host George Washington next Sunday for Senior Day celebrations.
