Bonnies Softball Stumbles In First Doubleheader of 2023

HONOLULU – The St. Bonaventure University softball team dropped contests to Seattle and Marist Saturday in Hawaii.

The Bonnies fell to Seattle, 10-0, in six innings before dropping the nightcap to Marist, 4-1.

Grace Walker registered three hits on the day to lead the Bonnies (0-3) at the plate.

GAME 1 – Seattle 10, St. Bonaventure 0 - 6 Innings
Seattle jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a first-inning two-run homerun off the bat of Madison Kahwaty.

Walker reached on an error followed by singles from Emily Piergustavo and Olivia Moon loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom of the first, but were not able to push a run across.

Seattle tacked on an insurance run by way of the long ball in the top of the fifth, extending its lead to three runs.

The Redhawks put the game out reach for good with a seven-run top of the sixth.

Walker and Juanita Wolak added hits for the Bonnies.

Emily Phelan got the start for the Bonnies, working 5.2 innings and striking out three. Kayla Ziemke and Sydney Rose also pitched in relief.

GAME 2 – Marist 4, St. Bonaventure 1
The Bonnies looked to get on the board early when Brooke Bobbey singled to lead off the game followed by walks from Walker and Piergustavo that loaded the bases, but the Bonnies failed to plate a run, leaving the contest scoreless early on.

Marist broke through on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second on an RBI single up the middle.

The Bonnies were quick to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the third when Piergustavo crossed home on a double steal.

Marist was able to get runners to first and third in the bottom of the fifth, but a Bonnies double play put an end to the scoring threat.

The Red Foxes broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run single to left-centerfield and then scored a third run on a wild pitch, taking a 4-1 advantage.

Elizabeth Lis got the ball in game two Saturday, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing just two earned runs. Phelan worked the final frame in relief for the Bonnies, striking out a pair.

The Bonnies are back in action Sunday afternoon against Marist and host Hawaii. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST.
