BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The St. Bonaventure University baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Gardner Webb Saturday afternoon to complete the four-game series in North Carolina.
Game 1 – Gardner Webb 7, St. Bonaventure 1 (7 innings)
Gardner-Webb got on the scoreboard first with an RBI sac fly from Mark Black in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
The Runnin' Bulldogs extended their advantage to 5-0 with a four-run second inning. Curtis Robison notched a two-run single, while Alec Burns hit in Robison with a double down to left field.
The Bonnies threatened offensively in back-to-back innings against starting pitcher Tyler Switalski.
In the top of the fifth, graduate students
Danny Manion and
Christian Szablewski got on base with a walk and single and were moved over on a sacrifice bunt by
Artin Biageyian, but Switalski was able to get out the jam.
St. Bonaventure once again threatened in the top of the sixth when
Adam Rankie and
Jack Putney recorded back-to-back singles and the bases became loaded after a
Jackson DeJohn walk, but a strikeout and a lineout double play would get Gardner-Webb out of the inning.
The Runnin' Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-1 victory in game one of the doubleheader.
Switalski threw a complete game for Gardner-Webb, giving up six hits and striking out nine.
At the plate, Nate Anderson led the Runnin' Bulldogs with three hits and an RBI, while Robison went 2-for-3 with two-runs batted in.
Graduate student
Liam Devine started game one Saturday, pitching four innings and allowing five runs with four strikeouts. Out of the bullpen,
Rushil Bhat worked two innings, surrendering one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Szablewski came off the bench in the bottom of the third inning and finished with a team-best two hits at the dish for the Bonnies.
Game 2 – Gardner-Webb 8, St. Bonaventure 2
The Runnin' Bulldogs continued to swing hot bats as they once again struck first on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with three runs on three hits. Alec Burns hit a two-run home run to cap off the scoring in the inning.
Gardner-Webb (10-6) tacked on four runs in the fourth-inning with the big blow being a three-run round-tripper of the bat of Tyler Mattson.
St. Bonaventure got on the board with an RBI single from
Adam Rankie to plate
Jayce Tharnish.
The Bonnies (1-11) added a run in the top of the eighth, but it would not enough as Gardner-Webb tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth to claim an 8-2 victory.
In relief,
Jonny Lintell,
Ryan O'Connell, and
Andrew Ayers each pitched a scoreless frame for Bona's.
Left-hander Reid Bertram started the game for Gardner Webb, pitching three innings and scattering two hits with three strikeouts. Following Bertram, six relievers came in to the game, allowing two runs and striking out five.
Tyler Mattison led the Runnin' Bulldogs with three hits and four runs batted in, while Curtis Robison also finished with three hits and an RBI.
Senior
Jake Biscailuz went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Bonnies will be back on the road Friday, March 17 when they travel to Maryland to take on Mount St. Mary's in a three-game series. First pitch Friday is set for 3:00 p.m.
