Ypsilanti, Mich. – St. Bonaventure got off to a quick start and never looked back, defeating the Eastern Michigan, 14-8, in a road matchup Tuesday afternoon.
The Bonnies got off to a quick start, with sophomore
Fiona McGovern continuing her hot scoring streak, connecting on an assisted shot 1:47 into the match.
Redshirt freshman
Jessica Notaro did not wait long herself to find the back of the net, using a pass from grace Hollenbeck to put the Bonnies up by two 25 seconds later.
St. Bonaventure continued this pace the rest of the first quarter, with McGovern completing a first quarter hat trick.
The scoring slowed down in the second period, as both teams failed to find the net in the quarter's first six minutes before Notaro added her second goal of the game, snapping the cold spell.
EMU was able to get on the board shortly after with a goal from Skylar Hilmer.
Bonaventure responded quickly, however, as
Brooke Piper got the ball past the Eagles goalkeeper to score her first goal of game. The Bonnies then added four more second quarter goals to take an 11-3 advantage at the break.
St. Bonaventure (3-5, 1-0 A10) was able to increase their lead in the third period, with Piper and Hiltz adding to their goal tally on the afternoon.
Eastern Michigan (1-4) scored four answered goals to start the fourth, but the St. Bonaventure lead, paired with an insurance goal from McGovern in the final minutes proved to be too much for the first-year Eagles.
McGovern (four goals), Piper (two goals), Notaro (two goals) and
Megan Schillinger (two goals) were the offensive leaders for the Bonnies.
Sarah Owens,
Nora Anderson,
Grace Hollenbeck, and
Abby Hiltz all connected on shots, while
Kassi Hogan, Schillinger, Hollenbeck, Hiltz and Piper chipped in with assists.
Defensively, Carolina Yoder,
Sarah Owens and
Brit Colangelo led the way with multiple groundballs.
In the cage,
Ashley Herrick and
Hayley McIntyre combined for nine saves.
EMU was led by Tracy Grollman (three goals), Avery Schwab (two points) and Sydney Lawrence (two points).
Hannaha Bargeron and Giuliana Ditsky combined for 14 saves for the eagles.
The Bonnies return home to face Davidson on Saturday, March 18. Start time is set for 12:00 P.M. This will be the home conference opener for the Bonnies.
