Bonnies Softball Sweeps Past Buffalo Tuesday

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Stout pitching lifted the St. Bonaventure softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Buffalo Tuesday afternoon at Joyce Field.

Brooke Bobbey and Olivia Santos collected a pair of hits in game one while Kennedy Haberl registered a pair of knocks in the nightcap.

Game 1 – St. Bonaventure 3, Buffalo 0
The Bonnies broke through on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning when Bobbey scored from second on a passed ball, giving the Bonnies an early 1-0 lead.

Madison Stewart, who was playing in her 100th career game, scored the second SBU run in the bottom of second, crossing home on a passed ball.

Bona's tacked on a third run of the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth when Santos doubled home Bobbey with a double down the left field line.

Emily Phelan got into a groove early on, not allowing a base runner from the third inning on. Phelan struck out a season high eight batters and allowed just two hits in the shutout victory.

Game 2 – St. Bonaventure 6, Buffalo 1
Phelan and Buffalo starter Julia Tarantino found themselves in a pitcher's duel to start game two with the game remaining scoreless through the first three innings.

The Bulls got on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to centerfield, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Bonnies, however, did not go away quietly as the bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth.

Kennedy Haberl started the scoring with an RBI single up the middle that scored Abby Suhr, tying the game at 1-1

A few batters later with the bases loaded, Sidney Rose stepped up and lined a single up the middle that brought home a pair and gave the Bonnies a 3-1 advantage heading into the later stages of game two.

Haberl put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth when she belted a three-run home run over the left field fence.

Phelan pitched 4.1 innings for the Bonnies and struck out three. Elizabeth Lis tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing just three hits en route to earn her first victory of the season.

The Bonnies are back in action on the road Saturday afternoon at Fordham. First pitch of the Atlantic 10 doubleheader is slated for 12:00 p.m.
