Bonnies Softball Tripped Up at UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team dropped an Atlantic 10 doubleheader Saturday afternoon on the road at UMass.

The Bonnies dropped game one, 6-3, following a sixth inning rally from UMass. The Minutewomen took game two from the Bonnies, 11-3.

Game 1 – UMass 6, St. Bonaventure 3
UMass was able to rally in the bottom of the sixth for four runs, earning the game one victory.

The Minutewomen plated the game-tying RBI single back through the middle of the infield, knotting up the score, 3-3. Olivia Packard brought two runs home during the next at-bat with a single of her own and Emily Whalen brought her around to score with a third run-scoring single of the inning, taking a 6-3 advantage.

The Bonnies were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but UMass was able to escape with the win.

Trailing by one heading into the top of the fifth, the Bonnies came to life scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead.

Olivia Whitecar started the scoring with an RBI single through the left side, bringing home Madison Stewart. Next up was Abby Suhr who lined a single up the middle, scoring Grace Walker and Whitecar.

UMass was able to pull within a run in the bottom half of the fifth with an RBI single.

Emily Phelan got the ball in game one, going the distance and fanning four.

Game 2 – UMass 11, St. Bonaventure 3
The Bonnies tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second after Brooke Bobbey reached on a fielding error, allowing Emily Piergustavo to touch home.

Bona's added a pair of runs in the top of the third to take a two-run lead. Elyse Graham singled home Kennedy Haberl and Piergustavo scored Juanita Wolak a few batters later.

The Minutewomen used a five-run fifth inning on five hits to take a commanding, 7-3 lead late in the ballgame.

UMass tacked on four more runs in bottom of the sixth, earning the doubleheader sweep.

Bobbey, Piergustavo and Reanna Perkins finished with two hits apiece.

The Bonnies and Minutewomen wrap up the three-game set Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
