WASHINGTON, D.C. – A four-run top of the seventh inning rallied the St. Bonaventure University softball team to a 4-3 victory at George Washington Saturday afternoon.
The Bonnies (10-27-1, 5-13 A-10), down to their last at-bat, were able to close the gap to start the top of the seventh when Kennedy Haberl belted a leadoff home run, cutting the deficit to 3-1, after GW blanked the visitors for the first six frames.
Bona's advanced the tying run to second in the seventh when Olivia Moon stepped in and smacked a pinch-hit single to right field, scoring Grace Walker and Oliva Santos.
Later in the inning, Olivia Whitecar gave the Bonnies their first lead of the ballgame with a single to center, scoring Macy Miller from second and put the Brown and White ahead.
GW advanced the tying run to third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Emily Phelan got the final out with her sixth strikeout of the contest, capping off the come-from-behind victory for the Bonnies.
Phelan scattered five hits in her 15th complete game of the season.
The Colonials (14-23, 4-14 A-10) struck first in the bottom of the second, plating a pair of runs on a fielding error.
George Washington tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double down the left field line.
Whitecar paced the Bonnies with a pair of hits while Brooke Bobbey and Abby Suhr added singles.
The scheduled second game was postponed due to lightning.
The Bonnies and Colonials are slated to wrap up the three-game set Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m.
