St. Bonaventure N.Y – The St. Bonaventure University women's lacrosse team came up clutch in the fourth quarter to earn a decisive conference victory, 11-10, over La Salle Saturday afternoon in their final game of the season at the Marra Athletics Complex.
With the victory, the Bonnies clinch a berth in the Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse championships. This is the programs first postseason appearance since the 2007 season.
Prior to the game the Bonnies honored seniors
Sarah Owens,
Nora Anderson,
Teri Manzelli,
Jordan Rokitka,
Caroline Yoder,
Hailey Grau,
Ashley Herrick, and
Courtney Fox.
St. Bonaventure jumped out of the gate quickly, striking first off a
Nora Anderson goal just one minute into the game.
The Bonnies (6-10, 4-4 A-10) scored three more in the first frame, which was capped off by
Abby Hiltz's 23
rd goal of the season to give the Bonnies a 4-0 advantage.
La Salle answered quickly in the second period, going on a 3-0 run of its own.
St. Bonaventure went into the break on a high note, thanks to a
Fiona McGovern free position shot goal with 1:17 left in the first half to give the Bonnies a two-score lead.
The Explorers would take advantage of Bonaventure penalties in the second half, scoring two man-up goals, including a game-tying goals from Ellen Stickney with 17 second left in the third quarter to tie the game.
Nora Anderson ended the Bonnies second half cold spell when she used a
Kassi Hogan pass to beat La Salle's goalie in the first minute of the final period.
La Salle (0-14, 0-8 A-10) responded with a goal of their own as Stickney added another.
However, the Bonnies would rack off four scored in a row down the stretch with the exclamation point coming from
Brooke Piper's back to back goals.
The Explorers would score three late goal, but It would prove to be too late as time would run out on their comeback attempt.
The Bonnies were led offensively by
Fiona McGovern (three goals/two assists) and
Abby Hiltz (three goals), while
Nora Anderson chipped in two goals and an assist.
Senior
Ashley Herrick made a great impact in the victory, collecting 12 saves Saturday afternoon.
La Salle was led by Ellen Stickney's three goals.
In net, Julia Dellaratta made 10 saves for the Explorers.
The Bonnies will hit the road to end the regular season at George Washington on Saturday, April 29
th. Start time is set for 1:00 P.M.
