Softball Falls To Rhode Island

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team dropped an Atlantic 10 doubleheader to Rhode Island Saturday afternoon at Joyce Field.

The Bonnies dropped a heartbreaker in game one, 1-0, and fell in game two, 6-2.

Game 1 – Rhode Island 1, St. Bonaventure 0
The Bonnies and Rams were locked in a pitcher's duel in game one with the contest remaining scoreless until the seventh inning.

The Rams broke through with the go-ahead run on an infield single off the bat of pinch hitter Caitlin O'Leary in the visitor's half of the seventh.

Rhode Island starter Liz Lynchard shut down the Bonnies in order in the bottom of the seventh, completing the shutout win for the Rams.

The Bonnies looked to score early on in the contest in the bottom of the third, advancing runners to second and third with one out. The Rams, however, worked out of the jam with a double play.

Emily Phelan got the ball in the circle, scattering six hits and fanning a pair.

Game 2 – Rhode Island 6, St. Bonaventure 2
The Rams struck first the nightcap, scoring the game's first run with an RBI single right back up the middle.

The Bonnies tied the game in the bottom of the third when Reanna Perkins crossed home on a throwing error from Rhode Island.

Bona's took its first lead of the day, 2-1, during its next at-bat when Brooke Bobbey scored from third on a second URI throwing error in the inning.

Rhode Island was able to respond with the tying run in the top of the fourth. The Rams loaded the bases with no outs, looking to take the lead, but Elizabeth Lis worked out of the jam.

A three-run top of the fifth inning on four hits and an error to take a commanding lead late in the contest.

The Rams plated their first run of the inning off an RBI double to left-center field and then scored a second run with an RBI single two batters later. URI pushed its lead to 5-2 after the third run of the inning came around to score following a fielding error.

Rhode Island (20-27-1, 10-11 A-10) added an insurance run in the top of the sixth, earning the doubleheader sweep.

Phelan started game two for the Bonnies, working 3.0 innings while Lis tossed 4.0 innings in relief.

The Bonnies (11-30-1, 6-16 A-10) and Rams are slated to finish the three-game series with a single game Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
