ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team dropped the series finale to Rhode Island, 9-4, Sunday at Joyce Field.
The Rams used a six-run top of the sixth to earn the series sweep over the Bonnies.
Rhode Island (21-27-1, 11-11 A-10) retook the lead, 5-3, when two runs came across to score on an error and never looked back.
The Bonnies were able to get on the board first in the bottom of the second when Olivia Moon belted an RBI double to right field, scoring Emily Piergustavo.
The Rams responded with a run in the top of the third and two more runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 advantage.
Kennedy Haberl was able to tie the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, blasting her team-leading fifth round-tripper of the season.
The Bonnies (11-31-1, 6-17 A-10) tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh when Madison Stewart singled home Haberl for a five-run deficit.
That is as close as the Bonnies would get, however, as Rhode Island recorded the final out of the game during the next at-bat.
Emily Phelan started for the Bonnies and worked 5.1 innings, striking out six. Elizabeth Lis pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief.
The Bonnies are back in action Wednesday on the road at Little Three rival Niagara. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
