Bonnies Baseball Travels To Richmond For Three-Game Series

The St. Bonaventure University baseball team will head to Richmond this weekend for a three-game series with the Spiders. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and all three games will be available live on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
  • The Bonnies played a trio of close games against UMass in a rainy weekend in Western New York in the team's last action on the diamond.
  • St. Bonaventure grabbed the series finale in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday, 7-5
  • Gabe Watts started the UMass series finale, throwing 5.1 innings and scattering four runs on five hits along with four strikeouts to earn the win on the hill. Reliever Ryan O'Connell picked up the 3.2-inning save out of the bullpen. Connell finished with five strikeouts, only allowing one hit and a run on his way to his second save of the year.
  • Christian Szablewski, Evan Dieter, and Jack Putney each drove in two runs in the victory.
 
FIRST YEAR PRODUCTION
  • Freshman Evan Dieter has made a great impact for the Bonnies at the plate in his collegiate season.
  • The first-year outfielder is hitting .310 in conference play and is tied with a team-high 11 runs batted in. In 29 games played this season, Dieter is fourth on the team with a .286 batting average with four doubles, a home run, and 14 RBIs.
 
JUCO IMPACT
  • Junior college transfers Adam Rankie and Kyle Caccamise have been leaders both offensively and defensively this year for the Bonnies.
  • Rankie has served primarily as the leadoff hitter and is second on the team with a .318 batting average and nine doubles. The former junior college All-American leads the team with 47 hits this season and 28 runs scored.
  • In A-10 play, Rankie is fourth on the team in batting average (.314) and tied for second with six doubles, while also not committing an error in the field.
  • After dealing with an injury early in the season, Caccamise is third on the team with a .308 batting average and second with in on-base percentage (.393).
  • Currently in conference play, Caccamise leads the team in batting average (.326) and on-base percentage (.412) with a perfect fielding percentage.
 
WHO'S HOT
  • In the Bonnies' last 10 games, Rankie has recorded a team-high .381 batting average with five doubles, while slugging .571.
  • Senior Thomas Grilli has hit .353 in the past 10 contests, smacking four doubles with five RBIs, while Caccamise, Jack Putney, and Pierce Hendershot have each drove in five runs.
  • Jackson DeJohn has a team-high .581 slugging percentage with two home runs in the past 10 games played, while Dieter has tallied 10 runs batted in.
 
ABOUT RICHMOND
  • The Spiders currently hold a 19-23 overall record with an 8-6 record in A-10 play, grabbing one game of a doubleheader at George Mason Saturday. The final game of the series was canceled due to weather.
  • At the plate, Johnny Hipsman leads the team with a .367 batting average and 14 doubles, while Jared Sprague-Lott has hit a team-high 10 home runs. Jordan Jaffe has drove in 42 runs so far this season.
  • Starter Jeremy Neff has notched a 2.78 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 35.2 innings pitched, while Esteban Rodriguez has made 12 appearances with 56 strikeouts and tallied two saves.
  • In last season's series, the Spiders swept all three games from St. Bonaventure. Pierce Hendershot gave the Bonnies a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning with a two-run double, but the Spiders scored four in the ninth inning to take game two, 8-5.
  • Richmond sits fifth in the A-10 standings after being projected to finish third in 2023 A-10 Baseball Preseason Poll.
