AUSTIN, Texas – St. Bonaventure men's lacrosse graduate Sean Westley has for the second time earned Academic All-America honors from College Sports Communicators (CSC), taking second team accolades.
With this year's award, Westley moves into elite company in St. Bonaventure Athletics history as he becomes just the fifth Bonnies student-athlete to be named a CSC Academic All-American twice. Westley, who was a third team pick last year, joins Jodi Urich (women's basketball, 1982-83), Kim Dodson (softball, 2004-05), Katelyn Murray (women's basketball, 2008-09) and Sam Fuller (baseball, 2018-19) as the only Bonnies to achieve Academic All-America status multiple times.
Westley is one of eight athletes selected to the 2023 Academic All-America At-Large teams to do so for a second consecutive year. The at-large teams include student-athletes from the sports of lacrosse, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, wrestling, skiing, water polo, volleyball, fencing, bowling and rifle. Honorees are nominated by and voted on by sports information directors nationwide.
He received his undergraduate degree with summa cum laude honors and a 3.97 GPA. He was also named honorable mention for the Dr. Pierre Bretey Award which is presented to a St. Bonaventure senior student majoring in finance who attains the highest academic standing. This past year, he worked on his Master's degree in business with another 3.97 GPA standing in his graduate work.
He became eligible for the Academic All-America teams after being named to the All-District squads for the third consecutive year last month. The Whitby, Ontario native was a three-time MAAC All-Academic Team selection before being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team this spring.Â
The program's all-time leader in career scoring, Westley is the only Bonnies player to suit up in every game since the rebirth of the program at the Division I level in 2019. He graduates as the school's leader in career points (156), goals (93) and assists (63). This season, he ranked sixth among all Atlantic 10 players in goals with 25 and his 37 total points stood ninth in the conference during the regular season.
Westley also is tied for the program's single-game goals (6) and assists (4) record while owning the single-game points record outright, scoring nine points in a game twice including this season in a win over VMI. His 14 games of three or more goals over his career are also a Bonnies benchmark.
He is one of only seven lacrosse student-athletes to be named to the Academic All-America At-Large Teams along with Will Bowen of Georgetown and Tyler Bradbury of Utah on the first team and James Christoforatos of Robert Morris, Chris Fake of Notre Dame, Maxwell Horton of Hobart and Wilson Stephenson of Duke on the third team.
Westley is in truly rarified air when it comes to St. Bonaventure Athletics history. In addition to the elite group he joins as a multi-time Academic All-American, he is also just the 15th Bonnies student-athlete to earn the honor in any sport for any season, first joining that group last year.
He will have the opportunity to play professionally following his Bonaventure career after he was drafted in the second round, 26th overall, in last year's National Lacrosse League Draft by the Las Vegas Desert Dogs.Â
