WATCHUNG, N.J. – Graduate student Lance Sininger continued his strong play to begin the season by earning a top-10 finish to lead the St. Bonaventure golf team at the Cornell Invitational held Sunday and Monday at Watchung Valley Golf Club in New Jersey.
The 36-hole tournament was plagued by rain in its opening day Sunday, with the round not getting underway until after 2:30 p.m. The players could only complete 16 holes before darkness, wrapping up the round Monday morning.
Sininger was not thwarted by the rain, however, finishing with a 1-over 72 thanks to a strong finish that saw him birdie both the par-4 17th and par-5 18th as action got underway Monday.
He continued that momentum by carding an afternoon even-par 71 to place in a tie for 10th out of 67 players in the field.
As a team, the Bonnies finished eighth with an opening round team score of 301 followed by an afternoon 292.
Senior Jude Cummings was second on the squad following rounds of 73 and 75 to tie for 28th on the individual leaderboard at 6-over par.
Sophomore Michael Bucko enjoyed a nice bounce back second round, posting 74 to finish up on Monday after an opening round 77.
Senior Peter Byrne, playing in his home state, improved by five shots in the afternoon to finish with 3-over 74.
Also in the lineup for the Bonnies was sophomore Caleb Decker who improved greatly from a tough opening round 86 in the rain to card 73 in the afternoon.
Playing as an individual, freshman Josh James had a solid tournament with an opening round 75Â and a second round effort of 74Â to take 31st individually.
After playing in three tournaments in less than three weeks to begin the year, the Bonnies will break until Oct. 1-2 when they head to Binghamton for the Mathews Auto Intercollegiate on the Links at Hiawatha Landing.
